Introduction

A one-of-a-kind event, Wine Over Water is a wine tasting held over the Ohio River on the Southbank Purple People Bridge with stunning views of the Cincinnati skyline.

This annual charitable event is hosted by the Newport Citizens Advisory Council (NCAC), a citizen’s group dedicated to improving the community of Newport for residents and visitors alike. Proceeds from this year’s event will benefit the repainting of the Southbank Purple People Bridge.

Participants will enjoy sampling a selection of international wines as well as offerings from some of Greater Cincinnati’s preeminent boutique wineries. This delightful evening of wine, hors d'oeuvres and live music is designed to engage a diverse audience of residents from all around the area and build a sense of community while supporting a good cause.

  • 2009 Martín Códax Albariño Rías Baixas 88 Points

    Spain, Galicia, Rías Baixas

    Pale yellow wine with a light body. The nose is clean-scented with saturated pear as it warms. In the mouth, crisp citrus acidity initially, giving way to concentrated pear as it warms slightly. The finish is short with more pear.

  • 2009 Clifford Bay Sauvignon Blanc 88 Points

    New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough

    A pale yellow wine with a light body. White grapefruit strongly on the nose and in the mouth. No shortage of crisp acidity. The finish is short with more white grapefruit.

  • 2009 Shoofly Aussie Salute 84 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu

    Ruby wine, medium body. Restrained nose of Hi-C punch (really, think back to when you were a kid). In the mouth, sweet berry punch and oak. The finish is hot, short and mostly oak.

  • 2009 Alamos Malbec 86 Points

    Argentina, Mendoza

    A deep ruby hued wine with a medium body. The nose seems reluctant with slight blackberry, vanilla and oak. Tastes of smooth blackberry are soft and round in the mouth. The finish has blackberry and oak with medium length.

  • NV Stone Brook Vidal Blanc 87 Points

    USA, Kentucky

    This wine is light bodied and colorless. A restrained nose of pear gives way to tastes of fruity pear. Off-dry in the mouth, with a medium finish of pear and peach.

  • NV Horseshoe Bend Vineyards Cabernet Franc Black Jester 80 Points

    Extremely restrained nose with tastes of dark fruit. Hard to be more specific, my impression was very nondescript. Nothing bad, but not a lot good either.

  • NV River Bend Winery Meritage 77 Points

    This Meritage can only be described as a vanilla bomb on the nose with very slight red fruit underneath. In the mouth, the surprises continue, with hot tastes of Kentucky bourbon and a hint of red fruit. The finish continues with the same. If I tasted this blind, I would have thought it was watered down Jack Daniels. Something has gone far awry here. Avoid.

  • 2007 Elk Creek Cabernet Sauvignon 87 Points

    Ruby wine with a nose of raspberry, vanilla and oak. Tastes of raspberry and vanilla, with decent acidity. The finish has oak, raspberry and vanilla. Hiding in there somewhere is a very slight hint of green pepper, not enough to detract from the overall impression, but enough to think something was harvested a little on the green side.

  • 2006 Elk Creek Sweet Owen Red 86 Points

    The nose has raspberry, eucalyptus, lavender and a soapy component. Felt like I was in the candle store. Sweet and fruity in the mouth with tastes of raspberry and slight pepper. The finish is sour raspberry and oak.

  • NV Lovers Leap Vineyards & Winery Cynthiana 86 Points

    The Cynthiana is a ruby wine with a medium body. The nose has violet and slight blackberry and vanilla. In the mouth, tastes of blackberry and pepper dominate. The finish is hot with pepper, blackberry and medium length. Overall, while it edges towards the rough side, it is very drinkable right now.

  • NV River Bend Winery Joe's Ice Wine 90 Points

    USA, Kentucky

    Joe's Ice wine is a pale light brown with a medium-heavy body. The nose has an abundance of honeysuckle and some apricot. Thick, yet soft and round in the mouth, with tastes of honey, tangerine and apricot that have solid density. The medium-long finish has more honey and apricot. Throw in an odd hint of peach to boot. Very well done!
