Dinner at Bistro du Vin

Elsa and I brought Wayne out to thank him for the wonderful work with our house. Two very decent house pours on the night.

• 2008 Franck Massard Priorat Humilitat 90 Points

  Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

  A very decent Priorat. I did not like this all that much on first try - found it very modern - but it certainly got better in the glass and with food, in this case a roasted suckling pig leg. Nose was marked by some modern oak, plums, ripe dark berries, and touches of earth and tiny hints of schist. A distinct floral accent started developing with some time and air. Nice fresh acidity on the palate, with more dark cherries, blueberries and plums, all showing some ripe sweetness and nice concentration. Finish has a pleasant length, again more plums and berries pulling away with lots of spice notes and a little touch of smoke. Pretty yummy.

• 2008 Chateau Musar Musar Jeune Red 89 Points

  Fun, interesting wine to drink. Cinsault, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Really interesting nose, with high-toned spice and herb notes - I picked out cumin and parsley, along with savoury scents of dried earth, and some plums and prunes. Palate was more lithe and nubile than rich or concentrated. Again, I got flavours of prunes and plums dancing around sweeter red-fruited cherries and raspberries. There was a little cola on the mid-palate and a touch of raisins at the back. Not the most depth, but all very attractive. Good length too, with a final burst of sweet cherries at the very end. Could not quite stand up to a suckling pig dish, in spite of slightly chewy tannins and fresh acid frameing the whole wine. Otherwise, it was a surprisingly nice house pour, full of character and good fun to drink.
