Coq au Vin and Wine

Introduction

Lionel, Rachel and Alex were over for dinner yesterday, and I cooked up some coq au vin in our new cocotte yesterday, using a lovely recipe that turned out quite nicely. Burgundies are pretty expensive in Singapore, so I used a nice, fresh 2009 Beaujoulais as the base wine instead.

Alex provided the white and red, both blinded, and I popped the Riesling to go with some lovely Stilton at the end of the meal.

  • 2007 Maison Champy Pernand-Vergelesses Blanc 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses

    A really good village. Nose had lots of flinty mineral, along with roasted almond nuts, some gun-smoke, white fruit and a touch of lemons - very attractively Burgundian. The palate was very fresh, with ripe lemons on the attack, married to a nice rich mid-palate, slightly creamy in texture, with ripe apples and pears, all laced through with more nice acidity. Lovely minerality too. Finish was just a tad short at first, but fills up nicely with white fruit flavours at the sides of the mouth and a bit of toast at the tail. A very solid Pernand.

  • 1998 Fattoria Montellori Salamartano Toscana IGT 92 Points

    I liked this. Very southern European, a bit rustic, but plenty of charm. Nose showed lots of earth, some rose petals, violets, bloody iron notes and plenty of dark fruit - prunes and plums. Very nice. On the palate, slightly rustic tannins at the fore, but these have started to soften nicely, with ripe dark fruits, more plummy notes, black cherries, some macerated prunes and a little raisiny undertone spreading across the palate, along with some meaty notes flecked with bloody accents. Super fresh acid everywhere, attractive flowery violets floating around, and a bed of wet earth flowing below the whole palate - all coming together very nicely. Long finish had a nice dried grape sweetness to it and an undetow of dried herbs and spice. Quite yummy, very nice complexity and tons of character. It goes a treat with Coq Au Vin as well!

  • 2007 C. H. Berres Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Spätlese 92 Points

    Much better than the last time I had it. This was far more open and giving. It's nose was really expressive, with tons of musky spices, bread fruit, some dried flowers and little streams of Mosel mineral. Quite lovely. Solid palate as well. Bright, cheery, almost sparkling freshness was wed to substantial body, with lemon curd at the attack that slowly gave way to a rush of stony minerality and flecks of spice at the finish, all wreathed with white flowers, white fruits and peachy flavours. Finish was not the longest in the world, but boy, this was delicious nonethless. A superbly balanced, well-shaped Riesling and, unlike many 2007s, this seemed like a true Spatlese rather than a downgraded Auslese.
