Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2009 Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc Private Bin 82 Points

    New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough

Agree with The Kokopelli. This is very predictable: the nose recognizes grassy NZ sauvignon blanc instantly. Simple, but not boring. More strict at the finish, which is good.

  • 2008 Villa Maria Riesling Private Bin 84 Points

    New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough

wet stones, seashells on the nose: fresh papaya with lime and seasalt on the palate: dry alsatian style riesling. A fine explosion of fruits and flowers which is reigned in towards the end. Finish is a bit tough with an astringent petroleum note. For the price (USD 13), this is a superb bottle of wine.

  • 2006 Villa Maria Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Reserve 88 Points

New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay, Gimblett Gravels

Warm, spciy, with cloves and pumpkin pie notes, extremely tannics, long finish. Perhaps too extracted, but a fine line throughout. Like an expensive cali cab, but for half the price.

    2/3 Cab
    1/3 merlot
sees about 60% new oak barrels (barriques) during 18 months.

Closing

All in all, these are some price worthy wines very much within the varietal typicity that they represent. Well made and straight forward.
