    Argentina, Mendoza

    Lovely aromatics but a little low acid and seemingly flat. Pineapple, gooseberry, steamed vegetables on the nose and a bit of smoke and butterscotch on the palate. Creamy from malo and a bit leesy with some nice green pea and chalk.

    Argentina, Mendoza, Lujan de Cuyo

    Jammy plum, berry, cherry fruits with a bit of soil/coffee character emerging. Spicy but pretty linear except for a slight gamy complexity that some of the Bonardas seemed to show. Chewy structure and short finish. Not a fan.

    Argentina, Valles Calchaquíes, Salta, Cafayate

    Supercharged nose with dark fruit, minerality, and spice. Grippy, astringent, with a hot finish but nice concentration. TCA showed up after some air.

  • 2006 Bodega Renacer Malbec Punto Final Reserva 90 Points

    Argentina, Mendoza

    Explosive dark fruit with a nice dimension of tar, licorice, coffee and some minerality emerging. Yeah, it's got some oak showing and the typical overt sweetness that's kind of confected but it's pretty serious juice that explores the next level of Malbec. My favorite 100% Malbec of the evening.

  • 2002 Bodega Catena Zapata Malbec Catena Alta 89 Points

    Argentina, Mendoza

    Very generous nose; blackberry compote, prunes, green olives, herbs. Pretty extreme depth of fruit, grapey in a pleasant way. This really showcases a new level of depth for the Malbecs this evening. Unfortunately it's pretty out of balance with decent tannic structure but low acidity that really struggles to support the huge fruit.

    Dark, youthful, primary. Familiar Malbec profile; fruit punch, slightly sweet, linear. A return to the typical after tasting the Punto Final and Catena Alta. Lacks a dimension of complexity that the Bonarda adds to the Patriota bottling.

    Dark extracted and primary again. Pepper and spice. Gamy, olive, oregano tones emerging. Preferred over the Amorio. Very good but nothing exciting.

    Argentina, Mendoza

    Inky black with clean, deep fruit on the nose. Licorice, minerals, spice, sweet. Nice breadth from the addition of 15% Cab and 10% Syrah makes this a much more complex and broad-shouldered wine than the pure Malbecs next to it. Wow, WOTN. Outstanding.

  • 2005 Grande Maison Monbazillac Cuvée des Anges

    France, Southwest France, Dordogne, Monbazillac

    Arresting nose of super glue, bananas, and canned vegetables. Moderately sweet, pretty mild on the palate with okay acidity, broken plant stems, flowers, honey. I don't know what to make of this, there is a dominating solvent/chemical thing that just confuses me and makes me think I'm somehow drinking plastic. Weird.
