Introduction

Fun to try all the wines from the Duval Leroy portfolio. Considering the prices and reputation, can't say I was too amazed at the food. Also, These pairings didn't really work for me.

Flight 1 - Passed Appetizers (2 Notes)

Croque Monsieur, Pigs in a Blanket, Baked Oysters in a Cucumber

Flight 2 - Jonah Crabmeat Salad (1 Note)

I had a similar salad in Anchorage that blew this away. This was not an impressive start.

Flight 3 - Uptown Macaroni & Cheese with Black Truffles (1 Note)

The truffles were a fun match with the Champagne, as they really brought out the yeasty and bread notes. However, the truffles were really overdone. There was no subtlety to this dish. I don't really know what the mac tasted like b/c the truffles overpowered everything.

Flight 4 - Roasted Wild Boar Loin with Fresh Local Quince (1 Note)

Things picked up here. The boar was cooked really well, although I wish there was more going on with the dish outside of the boar. Didn't really have anything to add to the champagne

Flight 5 - Fig Crostata with Champagne Creme Anglaise (1 Note)

This was delicious, and also a nice pairing. Really helped redeem the meal. Thanks, pastry chef.

  • 1986 Duval-Leroy Champagne Cuvée des Roys Brut 92 Points

    France, Champagne

Very mature. Complex but not over the hill. There's a ton going on in the front palate, but the finish was a little short. Very nice, but didn't rise to the amazing depths I was hoping for. 92+
