Introduction

With an excellent seafood-oriented tasting menu, we worked our way through 3 Mosel producers from consecutive vintages. This was not planned, but all of these wines were on the list, so what else could a bunch of Riesling lovers do?

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2004 Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spätlese

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Light yellow. Green apple and papaya. Pleasingly light, dry, crisp wine with a bit of petrol. Very nice, especially as a mouthwatering starter.

  • 2003 Grans-Fassian Trittenheimer Apotheke Riesling Spätlese

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Several shades darker than the '04 Christoffel which preceded it. Ripe honeyed nose with a blast of brown spices. Clearly more viscous (atypically so for a Mosel Spatese), but its moderate sweetness is balanced by significant acidity, thus avoiding any sense of dullness. Delicious, our favorite wine of the evening and astonishingly good for an '03.

  • 2002 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

From magnum. False start with a horribly corked magnum, but graciously replaced without hesitation by this one. Still light yellow. Very light and surprisingly dry for an Auslese. Lovely pure peach and apple fruit with excellent underlying acidity and a hint of mature Riesling aromas. Little or no botrytis. Probably the second choice of the group tonight behind the '03 Grans Fassian wine.
