Introduction

Fun mini offline at Matt's. Once again Kevin with a mystery blind wine which was a really nice Merlot blend. My wine of the night by a landslide was the Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande which I need to get more of.

    France, Provence, Côtes de Provence

    Nice overall but missing fruit. Spice, floral minerals and apricots with a medium finish.

  • 2005 Ilona Howell Mountain 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain

    Nice wine and served to us blind. I thought Cali Syrah due to the high levels of blackberries combined with spice. Very nice wine with blackberries, spice, smoke, cranberry and bluesberries. A minty quality comes up on the finish. Medium finish and fun to drink.

  • 2004 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    The transformation of this wine.

    Popped and poured:
    Rich and robust with smoke, cassis, oak, minerals and graphite. Firm tannins and needs some time in the decanter although solid. 93 points

    2.5 hours later:
    Violets, graphite, minerals, raspberries, coffee, herbs and smoke. Coming around a bit more.

    4 hours:
    Perfect timing! More subtle wine with coffee, raspberries, cassis, gravel and graphite. Concentrated and has a medium finish. This is a top ten wine of the year for sure! 95 points

    Day 2:
    Still drinking well but not quite as good as day 1

    Day 3: Too much time from being opened. I don't see the point in aging this wine for five years as if decated 4 hours it drinks as well as any 04 I have tasted.

  • 2006 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de mon Aïeul 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    This wine needs some time in the cellar but over the course of the night it improved. A nose of raspberry, garrique, rustic, coffee, spice and cranberry. Good acidity and floral notes on the finish. Still firm tannins and five years from now I will revisit.

  • 2005 Mas de Boislauzon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée du Quet 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    A bit closed at this point. I am this around 2 years ago and it was decanted all day which helped. Towards the end of the night it opened up some. A rustic wine with cranberry, some funk, coffee and spice. Medium finish. I would cellar five and sample again.
