  • 2009 Kaiken Malbec 85 Points

    Argentina, Mendoza

    Decanted for an hour, tasted double blind. This was a really dark wine, almost black, with a violet edge to it. The nose was full on fruity, cassis, a bit of oak, coffee and caramel. On the palate, yeps, this is a fruit bomb, lots and lots of dark fruit, somewhat sweet, not really any tannins, so full bodied that it's almost thick. Some people use the term slutty wine, this is it. Not actually bad as in poorly made, but very very full on.

  • 2006 Bodegas San Valero Cariñena Don Mendo Reserva 86 Points

    Spain, Aragón, Cariñena

    Decanted for an hour, tasted double blind. A nice garnet red to the rim. The nose was all about red berries and cherries, quite pleasant. The palate had a bit of earth, cherry, some tannins, not very remarkable, but enjoyable. I could get a bottle of this for weekday quaffing, quite pleasant.

Closing

Both wines cost less than 10€ in Alko, but I was pleasantly surprised by them, even if the Argentinian wine was definitely not my style, it was still a well-made wine.
