Vinci Dinner (10/28/10)

JBurman came to town about 2 weeks ago so some of the CWM got together at Vinci for dinner. Life has been busy so I haven't had time to post until now. No corkage on bottles 10+ years old. Very nice lineup of wine sand the food was very good. In attendance was JBurman, Otis and his wife, JCubed, Berno, my wife and I. My wife and I had a wonderful time. Here are my notes:

• 1999 Cantina del Pino Barbaresco Ovello 89 Points

  Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

  2nd time I have had this. Smooth tannins and ready to drink. Notes of tar and chocolate. 89 points.

• 1983 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste 89 Points

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

  Brought by Otis to dinner. Brick red color. This was holding up fairly well. An earthy wine with notes of dried mushroom and plums. 89 points.

• 1995 Tardieu-Laurent Hermitage 92 Points

  France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

  Brought to dinner by JBurman. One of the surprises of the night. Deep red color. The tannins were integrated. Rich texture with a very nice sweet/sour component. Black cherry notes. Round long finish. Going strong. 92+ points.

• 1997 Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino 94 Points

  Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

  Last time I had this was in 2002. Took this to dinner with JCubed, Otis, Berno and JBurman. Blackish red color. Not decanted. A full bodied wine which showed no signs of being from an early drinking vintage as some experts guessed. Deep structure. Ripe red and black fruit. 94 points.

• 1997 Tenute Silvio Nardi Brunello di Montalcino Vigneto Manachiara 94 Points

  Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

  Opened by JCubed at dinner. Drank alongside a 1997 Banfi BdM. Medium to full bodied wine. Notes of cocoa, currant and black cherry. Very good depth. Long finish. Well balanced. The 1997 BdM vintage keeps showing it's prowess. 94 points.

• 1999 Château Latour Grand Vin 93 Points

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

  Berno brought this to dinner. 2nd time I have had this wine. This was decanted for a little over 1 hour. Full bodied. Deep reddish purple color. Solid tannins still hiding much of the character. Notes of vanilla, cassis, roses and tar. Obviously in need of more time. 93+ points.

• 1985 Kathryn Kennedy Cabernet Sauvignon 91 Points

  USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

  Otis brought this to dinner. You could tell this had some age on it but it still had a very fresh and lively character. Dark red with very little bricking. Solid red fruit and herbal notes. Just a fine producer that almost never disappoints. 91 points.
