A visit to HdV

Introduction

While in Napa I visited HdV. This was an excellent visit. I had not had a lot of their wines and came away quite impressed. I also tasted some barrels of 09 which were very good. This is one estate with quite a commitment to quality.

  • 2008 Hyde De Villaine Chardonnay de la Guerra 89 Points

    USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

    This is crisp and clean. Lots of lemons and lime. Sees very little new oak. Refreshing. Chablis-like.

  • 2007 Hyde De Villaine Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

    This was very good. Golden in color, it sees a bit of new oak. Vanilla, peaches and lemon chiffon. It is soft and easy to drink. I drank a bottle with dinner, and it had just enough acidity to stand up to the food. Slightly sweet, I am sure it is just ripe fruit as there is not RS.

  • 2006 Hyde De Villaine Syrah Hyde Vineyard 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

    Ruby/magenta in color. The nose is earthy with dark cherries. A bit of menthol as well. This is velvety and supple. Lots of black raspberry fruit. This seems like a cool climate Syrah but is certainly ripe. Much more understated and less bombastic. At the same time, it is definitely of California.

  • 2006 Hyde De Villaine Belle Cousine Hyde Vineyard 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

    88% Merlot/12$ Cabernet. Purple/ruby in color. The nose is sweaty with cassis and cherries. This is soft and silky. Complex. Mostly cherries on the palate at this point. Seems like it needs a few years. Very right bank in style. I really liked this one.

  • 2003 Hyde De Villaine Red Wine 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

    This was opened out of their library. 90% Merlot. Purple in color, mostly clear and bright. Velvety texture. Lots of cherries. Complex. This is still very youthful although I don't know if it gets much better. Nice finish. Good food wine.

  • 2005 Hyde De Villaine Cabernet Sauvignon 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

    This is a one time release as they thought the Cab in 05 really warranted it. Purple in color, ruby to the rim. The nose has great depth with cassis and graphite. Smooth. Medium tannins. Lots of cassis and a long finish. Not a big Cab by any means, but very good and quite interesting. I think they priced it at $125 and its probably worth it. I think this will age for twenty years and need at least 5 more to maturity. It is different from all of the other Cabs I tasted this trip. Not as exuberant, but certainly not bashful.
