Introduction

The Taste of the Town featured some surprisingly good wines. All of these wines except the Albarino ($17.99) can be found retail for between $9 and $12. The food was really good with canapes of smoked salmon w/ fresh dill, smoked duck, and caviar with creme fraiche, all which paired surprisingly well with the Temparnilllo. These were followed by a ceviche which was the perfect match to the Albarino. Finally, with the Monastrell blend, there was a tuna cake that stood up to the big wine very well. I felt that this was a very successful event, providing folks with excellent wines that they might not try on their own.

  • NV Stolychny Sovetskoye Shampanskoye 86 Points

    Lithuania, Alytus

    Nice nose, yeasty with pear and golden delicious apple. On the palate, big smack of fruit, pear, delicious apple, hint of peach, very reminiscent of a good Moscato d'Asti. Finishes a little drier than expected, probably because the big whallop of fruit. Very refreshing, nice starter.

  • 2007 Bodegas Mano a Mano Mano a Mano 89 Points

    Spain, Castilla-La Mancha, Vino de la Tierra de Castilla

    Amazing nose. Black fruit, spice, tobacco, cherry, almost overripe. On the palate, nice flavors of blackberry, black cherry, smoke, plum, spice, vanilla. Finishes with smooth but present tannins. Drinks way above its price tag. Paired with canapes of smoked duck, smoked salmon, and caviar, almost a perfect match for all three.

  • 2009 Viña Nora Albariño Rías Baixas Nora 89 Points

    Spain, Galicia, Rías Baixas

    Beautiful nose. White flowers, citrus, hints of spice. On the palate, a little oily, but great flavors of lime zest, meyer lemon, spice, granny smith apple. Finishes crisp and clean. Great pairing with ceviche, gave a great sense of place.

  • 2005 Bodegas Luzon Jumilla Seleccion 12 88 Points

    I had decent expectations for this and it did not let me down. Nice nose of earth, plum, black currant, smoke, leather. On the palate, earthy flavors, black currant, plum, black cherry, leather, mocha, toasty oak. Finishes with nice acidity from the Monastrell. Excellent wine
