Williamsburg Winery Tasting

Val and I went to Williamsburg, VA, and tasted some not-so-good wines from Williamsburg Winery. Ended up buying some of the cheap white blends, the spiced wine and the dessert wine. Their whites are quite good but their reds are hideous. Only the whites are worth buying or drinking.

• 2007 Williamsburg Winery Chardonnay John Adlum 78 Points

  USA, Virginia, Central Virginia

  watery. green apple and banana on the nose. the fruit is weak and thin, but it's still oaky, which makes for one disjointed chardonnay.

• 2009 Williamsburg Winery Chardonnay Acte 12 of Sixteen Nineteen 82 Points

  this is a creamier, oakier chardonnay that also seemed more balanced. there's a hint of residual sugar here, which actually fits with the plump fruit. not bad, but not unique.

• 2008 Williamsburg Winery Seyval Blanc 80 Points

  i loved the sea salt on the nose of this wine. its creamy on the palate with good acid. it is a bit herbal, almost like rosemary, and a bit of green fruit. it's okay, but it tastes like the grapes used weren't fully ripened.

  fresh and lively wine with good acid and ripe peach flavors. for $8, this wine is far better than most supermarket whites.

• 2009 Williamsburg Winery James River White 84 Points

  what a great, lightweight white wine to have at picnics. its got a good floral nose with some nice acid and a hint of sweetness. a blend of a ton of white grapes that differ year to year, including seyval blanc and reisling.

  this was an atrocious merlot. thin, weedy on the nose and palate. there is a bit of candied fruit and chocolate, but the weediness is way too much.

• 2005 Williamsburg Winery Barrel Aged Claret 72 Points

  the nose shows way too much green pepper. its weak on the fruit, like watery currants, but the oak is way too abrasive and the spicy acid of the underripe grapes is not fun. val called this wine undrinkable and spat it out. i thought it was drinkable, but not pleasurable.

• 2005 Williamsburg Winery Gabriel Archer Reserve 85 Points

  light purple colored. the nose is reserved, but i can tell there's some stuffing down in there. with some swirling, it came out. its sweet and juicy on the palate with lots of cherries and a peppery finish. a good example of virginia wine done right.

  a great example of an east coast dessert wine done right. peach cobbler on the nose with sweet cotton candy. not much acid, and a bit goopy, but its still pleasant. val loved this wine.
