Burgers and Spades with Ken and Kelly

Introduction

Threw some burgers on the grill and then we played spades with ken and kelly. Ann selected the August West and Carlisle from our cellar.

  • 2008 August West Pinot Noir Graham Family Vineyard

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

    Tasted Blind. Smells great. Clove, pumpkin spices. Definitely a pinot. The nose leaps out of the glass. On the pallet, lots of red fruit, cherries and strawberries, some cola and spices. I also get a little cranberry and orange peel. I think this is a very nice wine and my only criticism is that it is a little bit hot. Ann loved it and kept saying cinnamon! I thought it could be a Rosellas vineyard. After Ann unveiled this I thought I noted a little graham cracker. Power of suggestion?

  • 2008 Cascina Lo Zoccolaio Dolcetto d'Alba Vigna dij Sagrin

    Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Dolcetto d'Alba

    Tasted Blind. This wine really threw me for a loop. Nice slightly funky nose with a touch of barnyard. Black and red fruits with some black pepper. Medium bodied. I thought this was a syrah/cotes du rhone for sure and was really surprised to find out it was a dolcetto. I thought they were supposed to be lighter bodied wines, but I don't know much at all about the varietal. I liked this and it was fun tasting it.

  • 2007 Carlisle Syrah Russian River Valley

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

    Tasted Blind. Big and rich. Black and blue fruits with some charcoal notes and faint vanilla. Great balance of acidity and tannins. Excellent length. I really liked this. I have to say I admire Mike for selling this for $20 bucks. Its almost crazy. He is right- I have not had a better california syrah for the price. No need to hurry with these and I will try to hold my last bottle for a couple of years.

  • 2007 Domaine des Michelons Moulin-à-Vent

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Moulin-à-Vent

    Tasted Blind. This was the last bottle of the night and I didn't take many notes. This also had me clueless. Smells french with a little funk/barnyard. Some red fruit with a slight vegetative note that made me think it could be a lighter bodied cab franc. When this was unveiled I was very surprised that it was Beaujolais. I thought I would have been able to identify one in a blind tasting but this was bigger and more complex than any other I have had.
