Thursday night football

A group of us gathered at shane's to watch the beloved bears take on the dolphins. We all brought a couple of wines and bagged them up. Along with the wines, shane picked up a bunch of hot dogs from hot dougs and tacos from big star.

• 1993 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles-St.-Jacques 93 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

  nose: this was an ever changing nose over the evening and when first visited blind it showed off etheral tones of roasted herbs, dark red florals, bits of gamey tones, and dark red fruits. With a bit more air a lot of chinese 5-spice emerged as well as more dark red cherries
  
  taste: lovely and robust medium feel with medium+ acidity along with lively tones of dark red fruits, chinese 5-spice, earth tones, bits of peppery tones and dark red cherries. Well balanced with a real refined sense to it right now
  
  overall: This was blind and was one of the wines I submitted. This was double decanted and bottle aired for about 45 minutes before drinking. This changed a lot over the evening, but showed off its wares once I switched it to a pinot glass. There was some bricking, but there was a very nice and vibrant medium ruby color to the wine as well

• 2008 Evening Land Vineyards Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 89 Points

  nose: tart and forward nose of dark red fruits, a good dose of spices, plums and rich tones of cherries. Good balance with nice depth
  
  taste: medium-medium/full bodied with medium acidity and rich tones of dark red fruits, spices and a good amount of tart cherry tones. Well balanced with some good upfront fruit
  
  overall: this is a really good young pinot. Was fairly easy to tell that it was an oregon pinot blind and was a good young showing from 08

• 2008 Bodegas Barco de Piedra Ribera del Duero 84 Points

  nose: a big and extremely rich with a whole lot of extraction and tones of black fruits, anise, spice tones and bits of dark raspberry compote tones. This was so dark and rich it came off as very similar to an aussie shiraz
  
  taste: full bodied, rich, and extracted feel with big tones of black fruits, anise, black cherries, and tones of asphalt. There is a stewed quality to the tones and its hard to tell what this is
  
  overall: my guess on this was an aussie shiraz. This was just overly ripe and extracted and hard to tell what it was.

• 2006 Cabot Vineyards Syrah Bacon Fat "One Barrel" Kimberly's 92 Points

  USA, California, North Coast, Humboldt County

  nose: very pungent and rich nose that filled up the glass with tones of spices, dark red fruits, dark red cherries, olive tapenade, smoke and of course a nice dose of bacon fat. A really gorgeous nose with real nice warmth to the fruit and tones
  
  taste: full bodied with good supporting tannins along with plush tones of spices, bacon fat, dark red cherries, and smokey tones. Well balanced with a real good polish to the tones and feel
  
  overall: This also came off as a new world syrah, but in a much better way then the previous wine. This was singing right off the bat and kept going on each re-taste

• 1983 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage 94 Points

  France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

  nose: absolutely classy and deep nose that has a seamless quality to it with pungent tones of dark red fruits, black cherries, gamey tones, leather, and bits of potting soil. This still had some power behind it, but with a more refined quality
  
  taste: polished and gorgeous medium/full feel with nice tannins still supporting the wine along with deep and classy tones of dark red fruits, leather, bits of rawhide, gamey tones, and some bits of earth. Extremely well balanced that is very well layered too
  
  overall: a gorgeous wine and a real treat. While it didn't kick into that final gear that some other chaves posses, this was a wonderful mature chave. This one was easy to pick out blind as we all knew it was in the line up. There had been some slight discussion before, but when this was poured there was no question what it was and showed off its pedigree

• 1984 Beringer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve 93 Points

  USA, California, Napa Valley

  nose: very classy and regal nose with elegant and deep tones of red fruits, herbs, cassis, cherries bits of floral tones as well as some cedary tones. There is also a slight warm and herbal quality to it on the nose
  
  taste: extremely well balanced and elegant medium/full tones of red fruits, cherries, mint, herbs and a bit of cedar all layer together. There are still some good tannins to this that show themselves off but are supporting tannins
  
  overall: This was another of my contributions. The fill was into the neck and the cork had very little staining on it. It was double decanted and ended up getting about 90 minutes of air before tasting. The color was surprisingly dark ruby with a bit of bricking. This wine has a real long way to go

The Bears played great and almost all of the wines showed great (except for one badly corked wine). Having hot dougs as well to go with the shutout victory made it all the better
