1985 Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon Bella Oaks 70 Points

This wine was corked, in my opinion, but Rene Gabriel, an expert on the wine said it was for sure not and that this was what it is supposed to taste like. Weird, smells like sulfur, tannins and yogurt, but you can feel the power underneath it. The same story with the Martha's, I think they messed something up in their cellar in 1985, or the wine will be amazing in 30 years time. I might find out some time but as I'm not betting my money on that, I probably won't find out.

This bottle came blind after the 1990 bella oaks, the difference was that it was decanted for three weeks (!) before the tasting. Amazing, that the wine still is better. We all agreed that this experiment should have been made with the 1985. The wine was performing good but not as good as the one decanted only 6 hours. The interesting thing was that it showed eucalyptus.

sweet, lemon, camomille tea, malt, tee, beeswax, head-to-head with the 1975 but won at the end, mainly because when you had nearly nothing left in the glass it had a fantastic nose!

Funnily this was the other way around, everyone said this was an off-bottle but I really liked it. Black-tea, tar, cassis eucalyptus, fat and powerful!
