DB Tasting Event

A friend of ours and a reliable rater of wine went to this even. We attach his comments

123 different wines in formats from bottle to jeroboam
8 Major stands: Champagne/Port/Sweets, Bordeaux Right Bank, Bordeaux Left Bank, Old Vintages, Rhone Valley, White Burgundy, Red Burgundy, Other Vineyards Areas
2 Huge Cheeses stands from Herve Mons (some amazing things were offered on the cheese front!)
With the exceptional presence of representatives from: Chateau Gazin, Chateau Angelus, Chateau Palmer, Maison Joseph Drouhin, Domaine Faiveley, Marchesi Antinori (each had his own stand)

Below are ratings for the 37 wines I tasted (not in order of tasting).

Margaux 1999 – interesting wine, quite open and drinkable, 94
Brane Cantenac 2000 – wine still closed (offered in double magnum) I think it will improve 92
Latour 1989 – What a wine! Very nice to drink now – 96+
Mouton 1998 – still very closed, has potential 93+
Haut Brion 1996 (red) – rather dry and disappointing 90
Palmer 1988 – very drinkable now, does not have the tannic taste of the 88s I previously tasted 94
Palmer 1996 – very closed, very tannic, maybe has potential to evolve but not sure 92
Angelus 2003 – very tannic 91
Angelus 1998 – very young still, huge potential 94
Angelus 1970 – nice and very drinkable now 94
Bouchard Montrachet 2006 – too young and closed 92?
Bouchard Meursault les Perrieres 2004 – very acidic, nothing like your usual Meursault 89
Coche Dury Meursault Les Rougeots 2006 – flat wine 87
Leflaive Batard Montrachet 2006 – not bad at all 93+
Leroy Meursault-Charmes 1997 – too old 87
Clos des Lambrays 2004 – weird wine! 89?
Denis Mortet Clos Vougeot 2005 – amazing wine, fruity and open and with lots of potential 96
Prieure-Roch Clos Vougeot 2003 – Interesting wine, stronger than your “usual” Burgundy…93
DRC La Tache 1989 – quite tannic and dry 89
DRC Echezeaux 1996 – another weird wine, rather dry 90
Chapoutier Ermitage Pavillon 1994 – Very nice wine drinking beautifully now 95+
Chapoutier Barbe Rac 1994 – Not bad 92+
Chapoutier Crozes-Hermitage Varonniers 1994 – average wine 90
JL Chave Hermitage 1989 – surprisingly flat for such a wine 90
Vega Sicilia Unico 1998 – good and drinkable already 94
Dominus 1999 – strong and tannic 92
Chateau Montelena CabSauv 1999 – Ok wine 92
Diamond Creek Volcanic Hill 1990 – nice wine 93
Henschke Hill of Grace 1998 – very nice and drinkable 95+
Penfolds Grange 2001 – big wine, too young still, 92 now but with potential to go to 94+
Tignanello 2006 – 93
Tignanello 2007 – 93
Solaia 2001 – Was expecting something more drinkable after almost 10 years…92+
Solaia 2007 – surprisingly drinkable and rather fruity 94
Trotanoy 2001 – disappointing wine, very closed and tannic 92
Conseillante 1998 – very nice to drink now 95
Clos Fourtet 1986 – rather flat 90

I unfortunately missed the following wines, either because they were finished or because it was too late and the event finished! Next year I will plan better…
