• 2009 Weingut Josef Leitz Rüdesheimer Berg Kaisersteinfels Riesling Alte Reben

  Germany, Rheingau

  Pretty nose with notes of citrus, peach, and floral notes. Similar notes on the palate with minerality throughout. High acid. Light to medium-bodied. Finish was a bit short.

  France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Montlouis-sur-Loire

  Restrained nose with floral, apple, and woolly chenin blanc notes. Similar notes on the palate. Dry in this vintage. High acid, medium-bodied, and medium-long finish.

  Served blind. Dark ruby colored. Medium intensity nose showing heavy oak treatment. Notes of cassis and eucalyptus. Medium-bodied. Low tannin and acid. (I geussed California Cab or Cab Blend)

• 2007 Cameron Hughes Lot 179 (Havens Black and Blue)

  USA, California, Napa Valley

  Served blind. Rich red fruit on the nose with a slight funky umami kind of note. Brambly red and blue fruit on the palate. Medium tannin and medium low acid with significant but well-integrated oak treatment. I geussed this as a California Zinfandel as first choice, with a Spanish Tempranillo as a second choice (The new world characteristics mixed with a few old world, had me thinking it could be Spain, but the structure didn't seem quite right).

  Rich dark fruit on the nose with toasted oak notes that are secondary to the fruit. More dark fruit on the palate. Well-structured and elegant. Medium high tannin. Medium acid. Long finish. Excellent.

  Black cherry and vanilla ice cream on the nose with just the slightest hint of celery seed. Rich dark fruit on the palate. Medium-high tannin, medium-low to medium acid.

  Dark fruit, blueberry, leather and a touch of vanilla on the nose. Similar notes on the palate. Rich fruit. Full-bodied.

  Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

  Sour cherry, earth, leather, and just a very slight herbaceous/black tea note on the nose. Similar notes on the palate. Gamey and savory. Big tannin, and medium high to high acid. Great wine. Drinking very well.

• 1989 Château Soucherie Coteaux du Layon Chaume

  France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Coteaux du Layon Chaume

  Interesting nose dominated by sea spray and mineral notes with hints of florals and honey. Similar notes on the palate along with some lemony citrus notes. I found the combination of minerality and sweetness without a lot of fruit flavors to be kind of interesting.

• 2002 Prager Winery and Port Works Royal Escort Port Paladini Vineyard

  Nose is dominated by raisin notes. More on the palate with additional notes of dark chocolate and black cherry. Sweet and syrupy. Kind of overwhelming at the end of the night when I had already had too much to drink.
