Introduction

Holiday time again and the crew got together to celebrate. We like to up the ante a bit this time of year, so some really nice wines were brought out to play. The theme was that everyone was designated a region and had to bring a significant wine from that area. Burgundy was not represented as Ben fell ill. We ordered off the menu, I had a wonderful pork belly stuffed clam appetizer and wonderful Delmonico steak covered in mushroom and port reduction.

  • 1980 Bodegas Muga Rioja Gran Reserva 88 Points

    Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

    A pale crimson color, nice nose, very much alive and kicking, lots of notes of raw meat, blood and iodine. Not much fruit to speak of, a bit thin on the finish. Enjoyable.

    Great nose of truffles and mushrooms, very aromatic, very acidic and still could be considered young tasting, grilled meats, spices, truffles, nice smooth finish. Very well structured wine.

    An absolute masterpiece of a wine. Silky smooth, absolutely complete, perfectly balanced, very soft yet complex. This had a great depth of fruit that kept going to another level, still very young and I'd say easily could age another 20yrs. Delicious.

    What a great nose this wine had! Huge notes of black fruit, hints of mushrooms, cigar and Asian spices. Very full bodied and thick. Really delicious.

  • 2002 Alban Vineyards Syrah Lorraine 95 Points

    USA, California, Central Coast, Edna Valley

    Decanted 1 hr. Initially the nose screamed sweat socks or locker room! Very odd and I wasn't pleased. This blew off eventually and what emerged was just wonderful, a velvety smooth masterpiece of Syrah, lots of soft, flowery red and black fruits, lush mouthfeel, so well balanced and even handed. An absolute delight! In no danger of fading.

    Decanted 1hr. Really nice wine, big nose of roasted meat and asphalt, funky and spicy, a bit high toned and bit heavy on the attack, but overall a wonderful wine.

  • 2007 Cayuse Flying Pig 94 Points

    USA, Oregon, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley

    Decanted 4hrs. Initially a bit tight and unyielding. The nose was classic funky Cayuse. After this opened up there were notes of plums, currants, allspice, black licorice and tobacco leaf. This is a bull of a wine and needs a bit of cellaring to allow all the components to come together. Fantastic stuff.

    Decanted 4+hrs. This was a mind blowing wine in my opinion, huge on every level. Very pure, but a tremendous wine with loads of blueberry and blackberry fruit, vanilla, mocha, coffee, it went on and on and on. Just a monumental wine that I would pit against any California Cult Cabernet. My WOTN.

    A real treat, this was a fantastic bottle, just chock full of ever evolving scents and tastes. A bit hard to describe the flavors as my palate was beginning to fade a bit, but really delicious. I think I had three small glasses of this and was very pleased with it.

Another successful event and more fun and laughs than anyone deserves. What a great group of friends who are so generous.
