What a strange wine! Simple, drinkable. Not one I would buy, but this certainly had interest factor with an unusual 50% Sauv Blanc, 25% Chard, 25% Semillon belnd. Nose showed rather puzzling notes of chalk, a dribblle of funky earth and plenty of white fruit and melon - I would not guess this in a million years. Palate had lots of high acidity, almost a bit tart when placed next to rather thin lemony fruit, but there was a nice sense of minerality beneath all that. With some time, little tropical notes started shading the wine. Not quite sure what to make out of this, drinkable for sure, but a little strange.
Simple, pleasant Meursault. Nose showed classic Meursault notes of creamy butter, fleshy white fruit, some peach and perfumy flowers. Very attractive. The palate was not quite there though. Nicely balanced, fresh and easy with lots of zippy acidity, but certainly showing a touch of 2007 lack of weight in spite of nicely rich cream and lemon flavours. Mid-lengthed finish closed with some almond nut and vanilla. I suspect this needs a bit of time yet, at the moment, it is a simple quaffable village.
What a waste - this was better than I expected, but far too young. It was still rather tight and unyielding even after two hours in the decanter. It was quite the classic Pauillac. Nose showed very masculine scents of earth, roasted meat, mushroom, tobacco and an underlayer of dark fruit, and the palate echoed this to a tee. More savoury than fruity, it had no lack of deep cassis notes, but was more marked by serious savoury meat and earth notes. The mid-palate was very full, very Pauillac, with plenty of depth and a layer of fine powdery tannins which still gave a nice grip especially towards the finish, where tobacco leaf mingled with mocha notes. This is a fine wine with a long future ahead of it - I wish I had more in the cellar!
A really pleasant Sonoma Cab. This was the clearly drinking the best at the moment, even though I thought the Bordeaux had just that bit more quality to go the long term. A bit aggressive when first poured, after an hour in the decanter, it showed a pleasantly dark frutied nose with blacberry scents, some earth and a twist of licorice. Palate was similarly well-fruited, with black cherries and cassis on the attack. Cleary new world, but with quite a bit of control and a nice sense of balance and structure, with fresh acidity paired with slightly chewy tannins, and a rather savoury undertone. It had nice enough depth on the mid-palate and a good longish finish as well, with more cassis, a touch of bramble and a dark chocolate and salted caramel tones. A very pleasant wine.
