Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2008 Domaine Leflaive Mâcon-Verzé 78 Points

    France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Mâcon-Verzé

4 words. Sour, acidic, sharp, thin. That pretty much sums up this wine. From the profile I thought this was a 2007. Pretty disappointed with it.

  • 2007 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

This is painfully young from the calm and brooding intensity. I get razor-like minerality and bright acidity which leads to the incredibly intense finish. Perfectly balanced and in harmony with all the elements. Not my favourite style of white Burgundy but I can see the greatness of this now and in the future. Outstanding.

  • 2007 Domaine Michel Gros Vosne-Romanée 81 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

This is very very thin on the palate until the only thing I get was stems. However, this is very Burgundian though. If there was an antonym for modern pinots, this would be it. Only Burgundies can be like this, seriously!

  • 2006 Domaine Michel Gros Nuits St. Georges Les Chaliots 83 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges

True to the terroir of the middle part of Nuits, this is a medium to full body bruiser with rustic and rough tannins. I am reminded of a stocky down-to-earth farmer ploughing his land.

  • 2006 Domaine Michel Gros Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées 85 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

The 2006 Brulees fulfils more or less what I expect from a Vosne 1er cru (spice, lushness, good intensity, etc.) but lacks a certain excitement; a touch of character which lifts it beyond very good to excellent.

  • 2005 Luciano Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

I could not pinpoint it but there was a certain something in this wine which made me pause while tasting it. It was like in a majestic old fortress, deserted of course, but right in the middle of the courtyard there's this small charming garden filled with all kinds of wild flowers and a gentle breeze passing by. I look around and wonder at the beauty and serenity of the environment.
