Budapest Wine festival (29 TN inside!!)

Introduction

Great event, located in The Buda castle. Over 200 Wineries from Hungary and from the Carpatian Basin. A special event for tasting all hungarian autochtonous grapes: Kéknyelű, Harslevelu and Budai Zöld between the white and Kekfrankos and Menoir for the reds...and Tokaji, naturally!!
All the tasting have been made in NOT perfect condition, at open air, during the festival. Tasting strictly refers to the tasted bottle.

    Hungary, Balaton, Badacsonyi

    Nice brilliant straw yellow. Floreal intense nose. Great minerality and acidity at first taste, then well balanced (not totally) by a good alcohol % and a good body. Not very persistent.

  • 2008 Bazaltbor Olaszrizling Nagy-Somló 78 Points

    Brilliant straw yellow, more intense and nice at nose than the Rizling. The positive notes, unfortunately are not confirmed at taste: too harsh, not supported by a weak body despite of a 13,5% alcohol

  • 2008 Bazaltbor Hárslevelű Nagy-Somló 73 Points

    A different product, more "rustic"..straight gooseberry both at nose and taste at first, then a clean mineral note. A bit leaning to demi-sec. Not armonic.

    Very light pale yellow, shows a pleasent smell of white fruits, agrumes, grape and white flowers. This hints are confirmed at taste: fruity!. Nicely acidic and mineral, has a slightly sweetish aftertaste. Just 11%

  • 2009 Valibor Badacsonyi Luca Bora 80 Points

    Muscat Ottonel 80% - Budai zöld 20%; Extremely light, almost white colour, but very consistent; perfectly balanced between the acidity of Budai Zöld and the scents (and sugar) of Muscat; long mineral aftertaste and dry taste notwithstanding the 3 g/lt of sugar. Rounded and apparently alcoholic (11,5%)

  • 2009 Valibor Olaszrizling Badacsonyi 77 Points

    Always pale in colour, more floreal at nose, then some resin. A fraction of the wine (50%) aged in hungarian oak barrels, giving the wine some scents of tropical fruits and sweet spices, covering the varietal tipicity. A bit oxydized.

  • 2009 Valibor Kéknyelű Badacsonyi 82 Points

    One of the wonderful surprises of this festival and of the autochtonous varietals. Also this wine is aged 7/8 months in 500 lt. barrels, but the wood is not affecting the great acidity and minerality, just adding roundness to the wine. Aromas of tropical fruits (especially at nose, pineapple) and MINERALITY!. The result is very well balanced and nice. Just 1600 bottles produced.

    very peculiar product: well balanced between the alcohol (13%) and glicerine (very consistent) on one side and minerality and acidity on the other. Dry at taste, but probably a high sugar content!! A long aftertaste of....pine nuts!!

  • 2008 Tornai Furmint Nagy-Somló Friss 78 Points

    Hungary, Balaton, Nagy-Somló

    Nice pale straw yellow. Floreal at nose (Acacia and white flowers) and clearly mineral. Well balanced in mouth, is a bit weak in body. 30% fermented in barrique, well amalgamated.

  • 2008 Tornai Furmint Nagy-Somló Top Selection Apátsági 76 Points

    Hungary, Balaton, Nagy-Somló

    A selection of the best grapes of Furmint, from the best plants of the winery. Nine months in 500 litres barriques, giving the wine some hints of honey and musk.. Roundness is pleasent at palate, but not characteristic. Mineral finish, but wood above all.

  • 2007 Tornai Furmint Nagy-Somló Top Selection Apátsági 82 Points

    Hungary, Balaton, Nagy-Somló

    Really a better vintage, both for the quality of grapes and for time passed in bottle. Here wood is more balanced, not just covering varietal character. Roundness and elegance donated by the barrique are well balanced by the acidity and a long mineral finish. One of the best wine tasted.

  • 2006 Demeter Csaba Eger Egri Bikavér Selection 80 Points

    Hungary, Felső-Magyarország, Eger

    50% di Kekfrankos, 40% di Cabernet Franc e 10% di Menoire, hand harvested. 2 years in oak barrel. Nice light ruby red, consistent. Red fruits at nose, but not too intense.
    Smooth tannins, for a balanced and rounded taste, also if a bit weak in body. 12,5%

  • 2008 Demeter Csaba Eger Bikavér Classic 78 Points

    In this vintage Kekfrankos grapes are mixed with Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Looking young in colour, and not promising a long ageing potential. Less elegance showed at taste and nose (a bit..rustic).

    This 100% Turan is really surprising!! Starting from a nice Brilliant ruby red arriving to smell: Intense and complex, mainly with red fruits (and strawberry above all). Well balanced and armonic at taste, with a good persistence. 2 years in 500 lt. oak barrels, giving smooth tannins and roundness. Remembering a Cabernet Franc.

    40% di Cabernet franc, 40% di Merlot e Kékfrankos 20%. Intense smell: flower above all, and red fruits. A nice product, but nothing to remark. A bit weak body (despite of a production rate limited to 35 qt/ha, and a passage in oak barrels)

    A very young wine, also if witha brief passage in barrels. Very fruity at taste and nose; good acidity and low tannins..to drink suddenly..with chestnuts. Menoir 100% (or Medoc Noir). 13,5%

  • 2008 Vincze Béla Eger Arcanum Egri Merlot 78 Points

    Intense ruby red, consistent. With a nice fruity smell (wild cherries above all) and nice taste. tannins still a bit harsh, balanced by a 15% alcoholic content.

    Almost 2 years in 225 lt. hungarian oak casks for this wine, showing a nice ruby red and anyway not covering the varietal characteristics. Good fruit at taste and nicely tannic. A bit weak body. 14,5%

  • 2002 Vincze Béla Eger Cuvée

    Hungary, Felső-Magyarország, Eger

    6 varietal, international and autochtnous for this wine, passing 4 years in oak barrels!! (Cab. Sauvignon, Cab. Franc, Blaufrankisch, Merlot, Zwiegler, Pinot noir). Unfortunately the complexity and structure of this wine, needs much more time to open completely. At taste was closed, with "game" hints. Also fruit at taste was not evident. Just 12,5%

  • 2006 Vylyan Villányi Duennium Cuvée 83 Points

    Hungary, Dél-Pannónia, Villányi

    Merlot, Cabernet Franc e Cabernet Sauvignon; Full ruby red, a bit close at nose: alcohol above all (15,5%) and game, then some fruit. Intense and persistent at taste, with notes of Tobacco and chocolate. Tannins a bit pricky, anyway well balanced by a good roundness.

  • 2003 Disznókő Tokaji Szamorodni Dry 78 Points

    Hungary, Tokaji

    Furmint + Hárslevelű. Nice golden yellow, very consistent . Rich nose: overmature grape, dry apricots, mildew. Dry, smooth, very mineral; a bit weak in body, but with a long almond finish. 14%. 1 year in small barrique.

    Golden yellow, with hints of dried fruit at nose and mildew. Sweet and smooth, but balanced by a great acidity and minerality. The result, yet, is not very armonic. WS: 93 [2008]

    Amber yellow, brilliant, very consistent. Not intense at nose, but with a clear note of honey above all. Very well balanced between smooth and harsh components. A bit weak body. WS: 94 [1997]

    Brilliant amber yellow. Intense aromas of dried and candy fruits, honey. Sweet, but with a good acidity: very well balanced, with a long finish!! Will age for years to come. 11,5%. WS: 92 [2004]

  • 2009 Chateau Dereszla Tokaji Dry 79 Points

    Hungary, Tokaji

    75% Furmint, 20% Muscat and 5% Hárslevelű make up this blend. Very light straw yellow, consistent for his 14% alcohol...Delicate at nose, fruity and floreal. Dry and VERY MINERAL. Weak body, overcome by the hot alcoholic sensation.

    Semy sweet wine (Fèlszaras); 14, 5%, 7 months in oak barrels, but low intensity aromas; Good acidity and minerality and sufficient body...but I didn't like the taste. Unbalanced.

  • 2009 Chateau Dereszla Kabar Tokaji Late Harvest

    This wine is a kind of experiment: it is, infact, the first time it is harvested lately, normally giving dry or semy dry wines. This has a 140 gr./lt of sugar. The result (not really inteded to be as it showed..) is not really encouraging, also if showing the typical characteristics of sweetness/roundness vs. acidity/minerality. WS: 90 [2010]

  • 2005 Chateau Dereszla Tokaji Aszú 5 Puttonyos 87 Points

    Light Amber yellow, consistent. Good nose with aromas of dried fruits (apricot and orange above all) and honey. Very well balanced between sweetness and acidity/minerality, with a nice (also if not longest) mineral finish. 75% Furmint, 25% Harslevelu. 24 months in oak barrels. WS: 93 [2010]

Closing

A plus for the autochtonous grapes (white and red). For international varietals a good q/p rate, but not much more.
