Introduction
My first time at this most incredibly decadent annual fete. About 14 wonderful wine and foodies gathered to try many "big boy" wines with a matching course for every few wines. Each meal was prepared by the attendees with impressively deft skill. Courses included duck confit, fois gras, veal meatballs, beef tenderloin with a reduction sauce, on and on and on. Our host Desmond, has a beautiful home and the venue helped create a special ambiance. The group gathered at 12:30pm and tried a few whites (Sea Smoke Chard, M.More 2004 Batard, Kongsgaard Chard) before sitting down for the more formal event.

After the main event, wines kept coming and coming, it is now all a fog, but recall a Linne Calado red, Beaucastel Blanc VV, Kongsgaard Chardonnay "The Judge" 2005, and Sea Smoke Ten. Finally, at about 9pm or so I was kindly offered to share a car home. Yikes what a wonderful day! I was told the event was 24 years old and was started after a group of young enthusastic tasters were not included in high end local wine affairs. We toasted one of the founderswho had past away only days before knowing he was looking down and smiling. I only hope an invite finds its way to me next year.
2000 R. López de Heredia Rioja Reserva Viña Tondonia

Dark earthy sweet blackberry nose, perfumed and complex.
Very oaky, lean dry older flavors, mellow woodsy, dried black fruits, great acidity. Medium body. Dry and edgy. leaner fruits. 91. Interesting wine, but seems older than it should be. This is old style Rioja.

2006 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve 92 Points

Sweet dry light aromas of delicate fresh Grenache fruit.
Lighter weight than I expected. Dry, somewhat chewy with good acid profile, an interesting match for the Heridia. good sweet edge to wine showing nice Grenachecherry fruit, but more subtle than many modern style producers. Nice attack, a classy French wine that shows good acid backbone, more of a food wine. Nice black pepper. 92.

Dark sweet fresh berry nose, sweet almost lush nose.
Nice density ripe with nice balance, more layers, sweet, will get better, young. creamy chocolate edge. A very pretty wine with plenty of ripe fruit. 96

Sweet and lush with nice density, a bit quick but lovely.

Good nose showing nice bright lighter more nuanced peach and apricot.
Rich sweet dense, quite lush. 92 Some chemical quality on finish, hold it back.

Dark sweet black fruit aromas, quite pretty.
Very oaky with nice entry, but thenmiddle falls off badly. Dry and edgy seems not well integrated and lacking middle fruit, acidic. Perhaps a weak bottle. 86?
