2007 Burgundies

Last night my tasting group met to try some 2007 Burgundies. The objective was to sample the vintage, yet keep the price under $60. All of the wines were served blind and consumed over 2.5 hours. Breads and cheeses were served alongside.

This was my first real look at this vintage and I was unimpressed. The wines were mostly not worth the money except possibly at the lower end. Our 2009 Beaujolais tasting a couple months ago was far more rewarding.

• 2007 Mommessin Pouilly-Fuissé 90 Points

  France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Pouilly-Fuissé

  I liked this very much. It was perhaps served too cold for my tastes, however, that accentuated the acidity I think which was probably a good thing. Light golden in color. The nose is smoky, has some sulfur but also some grapefruit. Lively on the palate, however it stops a bit short. Oily texture which I really like. Nice grapefruit. Still youthful.

• 2007 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Faconnières 88 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru

  The group liked this more than I. It was the groups WOTN although it received no number one votes. Also the most expensive wine. Ruby in color, clear and bright. The nose has cherries and cherry powder. Great texture, so perhaps this will develop with time. Cherry liqueur notes with some slight heat. This really improved with some bread and cheese.

• 2007 Domaine Denis Bachelet Côte de Nuits Villages 85 Points

  Disappointing for $40. Light ruby in color, clear and bright. The nose has cherries and rhubarb. Tart cherries on the palate and a cherry Spree candy quality. Simple, light but a bit too tart for me to make it an every day drinker.

• 2007 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Roncières 90 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru

  The groups #2 wine. Light ruby in color, clear and bright. The nose is slightly earthy with nice cherries. I thought this had the best chance of developing into something really good. Nice texture. Complex. Cherries on the palate. At $57, it is not cheap, but is very nice.

• 2007 Bruno Colin Bourgogne 87 Points

  Light ruby in color, clear and bright. Very tight on the nose (or perhaps vacant), it never did develop much. On the other hand, the palate had a nice sour cherry note. Slight cough syrup on the finish. Tasted sort of new worldish with a bit more acid. Even some tannins. At $19, there is some value here for an inexpensive Pinot.

• 2007 Domaine Ponsot Bourgogne Cuvée du Pinson 87 Points

  Very light ruby in color, almost pale. Sour cherries on the nose. Tastes big on the palate, but sort of a generic rhubarb and cherry quality. Nothing special here. The label did have the temperature dot on it.

• 2007 Bruno Colin Maranges 1er Cru La Fussière 89 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Maranges 1er Cru

  Ruby in color, clear and bright. The nose has cherries and sour cherries. It is tight but opened slightly with air. Slightly sweet on the palate turning tart on the finish. Does seem riper than most and with an underlying complexity.

• 2007 Domaine Sylvain Pataille Marsannay Clos du Roy 91 Points

  This was my WOTN although I liked it more than the group. Not going to see old bones but very enjoyable right now. Ruby in color, clear and bright. The nose is earthy with cherries. Juicy texture. Complex cherries. My favorite finish on the night.

• 2007 Simon Bize Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Vergelesses 90 Points

  I liked this one as well. Very pale ruby color. dried cherries on the nose with a slight earthiness. Complex and tart rhubarb with some cherries. A bit vegetal on the finish.

• 1990 Charles Laurent Chambolle-Musigny 78 Points

  This was added as an extra. It was purchased in France in 1996 for about 30 dollars I was told. Deeper ruby with some dark brown in color. The nose reminded me of pancakes, freshly grilled. Also very dusty. On the palate, this is thin, bitter and well over the hill. Not sure how good this was in its prime. It is certainly drinkable, but I don't think I would.
