2000 Chateauneuf-du-Pape

Tasted Thursday, April 13, 2006 by Ben Andersen with 1,065 views

Introduction

My wines of the tasting were the 2000 Beaucastel and the 2000 Clos du Caillou Quartz. I loved the deep, spicy quality and precision of both wines. The temp in the small private room was a bit warm by the end, which certainly had an effect on how the wines tasted towards the end showed. I would have loved to have had them all at cellar temp...

Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • 2004 Aubert Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Cloudy. Rich and thick, with yellow fruit and caramel. Suave texture. I would not be in the mood for this very often, but I can appreciate the work that went into making this massive Chardonnay.

  • 2000 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Quite aromatic and already showing nice evolution of aromas and flavors - licorice, smoked game / earth / leather, thick red/black fruit. Tasted side by side with the '00 Clos des Papes (see TN), the '00 Beaucastel was darker and more aromatic. Wow. I'm really impressed and should have bought more (probably will go get more).

  • 2000 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Had not had this since release (3 yrs+). Tasted side by side with the '00 Beaucastel (see TN), the two wines were quite different. The Clos des Papes had fruit that leans farther to the red side of the spectrum, with slightly pruney fruit, a gamey, ever so slightly oxidized note, and dusty, spicy tannins. A nice, Grenache-driven, traditional Chateauneuf.

  • 2000 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

This bottle was double decanted five hours before serving. Fresh, pure, dark cherry fruit, with a bit of a metallic note and a hint of meatiness at its core. Concentrated, round and ripe. Seems less juicy / syrupy / primary than a bottle last year (see TN) - though the decanting process this time around could explain some of that. Very nice wine.

  • 2000 Eric Texier Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Slightly muted nose. Cola, earth, licorice, dark fruit. A bit coarse on the palate - somewhat rustic, with dusty tannins. Everyone agreed this was a fine "value" Chateauneuf, but nobody was overly impressed, and it probably did not flatter it to taste it next to the '00 Janasse Vieilles Vignes (see TN).

  • 2000 Clos du Mont-Olivet Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Diffuse aromas of dusty red fruit and a whiff of oxidation. A bit hot and lacking focus.

  • 2000 Bosquet des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Chante Le Merle Vieilles Vignes

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

(Magnum) Reminded me of the '00 Clos des Papes, tasted earlier in the evening (see TN). Red / raspberry fruit, spice, earth, slight medicinal note. Nice.

  • 2000 Le Clos du Caillou Châteauneuf-du-Pape Domaine du Caillou Les Quartz

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

One of the more impressive wines of the evening. Served side by side with the '00 Font de Michelle Cuvee Etienne Gonnet (see TN). More tannin and spice than the more fruit driven Etienne Gonnet. Somewhat raspy, black fruit and licorice; well framed. More structured than a number of other '00s I've had. Quite impressive. Definately a dark, burly wine. I'd expect this will age quite well.

  • 2000 Domaine Font de Michelle Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Etienne Gonnet

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Tasted side by side with the '00 Clos des Caillou Quartz (see TN). Fairly aromatic. Black / red fruit. spicy. Starting to show a little underlying meatiness. Strikes a nice balance between the new and old school - though it leans towards the new... Almost like a cross between the Caillou Quartz and the Janasse V.V. tasted earlier in the evening (see TN). Impressive.

  • 2000 M. Chapoutier Châteauneuf-du-Pape Croix de Bois

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Spicy, prune, licorice. Reddish fruit. Old-school / typical in style. Very nice. This was the first time I've had this wine, and I was impressed.

  • 2000 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chaupin

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

There was some debate over whether this could be corked. I don't think it was, but it was definately not showing as well as previous bottles of this that I've had (see TN). The serving temp was too warm, which definately did not flatter it. Quite diffuse, I just could not get much of anything to come into focus. Again, I think the temp was probably to blame for a weak showing here.
