Introduction

Everybody brought 1-2 bottles for a fun evening :-)

Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 2008 Sergio Barale Langhe Chardonnay 80 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

    Nose has sweet pineapple and harsh (rancid) butter mixed with a little strawberry and licorice.
    Very weak on the palate and almost watery. A little pineapple and licorice with a mineral but alcoholic aftertaste.
    Disappointing.

  • 1998 Azienda Vinicola Dacapo Barbera d'Asti Vigna Dacapo 86 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Asti, Barbera d'Asti

    Shoe polish nose dominated by smoke, gun powder, tar and asphalt.
    Watery and closed down palate. Sour cherry pits and okay acidity. A clear lack of tannins to balance out the impression.

  • 2000 Travaglini Gattinara Riserva 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Gattinara

    Raspberry nose with a little sewer and sweet coffee.
    Sweet and full bodied cherries with a good acidity and juicy tannins. Good intensity but overall not really impressive. Seems mature.

    Juicy blackberry nose mixed with tar and vanilla. Good intensity.
    Again juicy blackberry fruit on the palate with a solid and intense fruit-acidity that continues nicely into the aftertaste. Good balance.

  • 2004 Pio Cesare Barbera d'Alba Fides 88 Points

    Strange nose with decayed water lots of iron and wet dog :-)
    Juicy cherries and iron is present on the palate with huge amounts of tannins. Strange coconut flavors in the aftertaste.
    Perhaps defective bottle?

    Nose: rosebush, red currant and raspberry fruit.
    Palate: Intense red currant fruit with harsh but still approachable tannins. Good and long acidic aftertaste.

  • 2005 Silvano Bolmida Barolo Bussia 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Nose: Sweet raspberry and black currant leaves.
    Palate: Very young fruit, almost black currant like, but mainly raspberries. Very harsh tannins but still with a solid acidity. A little rose flavors but overall an unbalanced with due to the overpowering tannins.

  • 1997 Giuseppe Contratto Barolo Tenuta Secolo Cerequio 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Nose: Saltwater and gasoline with a little red currant and dirt.
    Palate: Fresh raspberry and rosewater. Incredibly fresh with a very impressive acidic aftertaste ending in rosewater flavors. Still young and perhaps lacks a little complexity.

  • 1997 Michele Chiarlo Barolo Cerequio 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Nose: Gunpowder, manure, petroleum, asphalt.
    Palate: Rose leaves, red currant. Vibrant acidity and long aftertaste. Still a good wine but not as impressive as the previous Contratto cerequio. Lacks balance and overall harmony.

  • 1996 Sottimano Barbaresco Cotta Vigna Brichet 93 Points

    From MG but this was decanted for 3 hours.
    Impressive and intense cherry nose with some dark plum fruit also. Nicely mixed with almonds and vanilla.
    Full bodied dark cherry fruit on the palate with great balance and long aftertaste. Very fresh and overall very impressive. Some black pepper showing nicely on the mid-palate.

    VA and brown sugar on the nose.
    The bottle seems "boiled" and clearly not good.

  • 1996 Pio Cesare Barolo Ornato 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Intense raspberry and vanilla nose.
    Dark plum fruit on the palate and it seems still very young. There is some oak influence here showing as a pungent vanilla note. Long and acidic aftertaste. Beautiful wine.

  • 1990 Pio Cesare Barbaresco Il Bricco 95 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

    Intense nose with dark plum fruit intermixed with vanilla, sewer, eucalyptus/menthol and a tinge of worn leather.
    The palate shows a fully mature wine that is drinking very nicely now. Fresh plum fruit with juicy tannins and also a little leather. Excellent balance and impressive acidity.
    Can keep but is peaking now.

  • 1996 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Riserva Granbussia 96 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    A field of fresh flowers is dominating the nose which is very intense. Also present is sweet plums with a hint of wet forest floor and camphor. Wauw.
    The palate is very fruity and potent with red currant and roses and simply put a wall of fruit acidity! There is complex hints of eucalyptus and camphor with leather showing nicely on the mid-palate. Great wine with a lot of potential.

  • 1996 Luciano Sandrone Barolo Cannubi Boschis 97 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    A really complex nose with a lot of roses with mushrooms and shit with a mix of green leaves.
    Complex flavors showing red currant fruit, plums, camphor and menthol. Again the rose leaves are nicely present.
    Overall it has great balance and its very own personality. Great body and depth of the fruit.

    Nose: Honey, botrytis, vanilla. Intense but a little overdone.
    Palate: Dusty pineapple and yellow apples. Only slightly sweet. Oxidized and a bit strange. NR
