Introduction

sprnplr is in town for business this week so a few of us gathered last night at Urbano's Cafe to share a few bottles, some great food and fantastic company. Here are the results:

  • 1985 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut Rosé Rare 91 Points

    Tasted non blind. Opened and served immediately.

    Salmon color in the glass, clear looking throughout with tiny, light beading. Nose of ash, berries, raspberries and rose petals. Flavors of berries, raspberries and a hint of cherries on the medium finish. Medium to bright acidity, medium to full bodied. Drink or hold. I'd drink myself.

  • 2006 J. Rochioli Chardonnay River Block 91 Points

    Tasted non blind. Opened and served immediately.

    Light yellow to yellow color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of nutmeg, creme fraiche, yellow pears and yellow apples. Flavors of cream, yellow pears and a hint of cinnamon on the medium finish. Medium acidity, medium to full bodied. Drink over the next 3-5 years. I'd drink now myself.

    Light yellow color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of hazelnut, nutmeg, yellow pears and a bit of spiciness I can't quite identify. Flavors of yellow pears, lemon curd and minerals frame over a medium finish. Medium acidity, medium to full bodied. Drink or hold, I'd likely hold.

  • 1981 R. López de Heredia Rioja Gran Reserva Viña Bosconia 93 Points

    Tasted non blind. Opened and served immediately.

    Garnet color in the glass, fairly clear looking. Nose of leather, earth, dust, berries, cherries, a bit of smoke and a bit of wet stones. Flavors of tart red berries, raspberries and a hint of cherries on the medium to long finish. Medium to bright acidity, medium tannins, medium to full bodied. Drink or hold. Should hold for several years to come.

  • 2004 Chehalem Pinot Noir Reserve 92 Points

    Tasted non blind. Opened and served immediately.

    Garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of graham crackers, red hills dirt, berries and cherries. Flavors of berries cherries and a hint of raspberry on the medium finish. Bright acidity, medium to firm tannins medium to full bodied. Drink now with some air time or hold another year or two. Should drink well into the next 3-4 years fairly easily.

  • 2001 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon 93 Points

    Tasted non blind. Opened and allowed to slow-O over several hours.

    Dark garnet to purple color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of camphor, currants, plums and black cherries. Flavors of black cherries, black berries and plums. Medium acidity, medium to firm tannins, medium to full bodied. Can be drank now with some air but I think I'd recommend holding another year or two before trying again.
