Introduction

With CES in town, there were a bunch of out-of-town wine enthusiasts around. 8 of us met up at Lotus for a nice dinner.

Flight 1 (12 Notes)

Thanks to everyone for bringing such an interesting selection of wine. The Trousseau and Scholium Gewurz were REALLY fascinating wines.

  • 1989 Bollig-Lehnert Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Riesling Spätlese 92 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Very exciting nose of pineapple, peaches and apples that have been drizzled with diesel fuel. Really enjoyed the exotic palate that combined spicy tropical fruit with crushed rocks and lanolin. Very impressed with the depth this Riesling had. The acidity on the finish was still intense and this was a great accompaniment with the delicious beef jerky at Lotus of Siam.

  • 2009 Dönnhoff Felsenberg Riesling Großes Gewächs 92 Points

    Germany, Nahe

Exotic nose of bananas, apples, lush melon, and smokey minerals. The palate was equally as exotic. Honeydew tones, tropical fruits, delicate apricot, and wet slate dominated the palate. All of these flavors were woven seamlessly together and the bracing minerality tied it all nicely in a bow. Another example of a young, impressive, Donnhoff.

  • NV Veuve Fourny & Fils Champagne Premier Cru Brut Rosé 90 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

Great nose of fresh strawberries, yeast and spicy cranberry. Palate was so fresh with light red fruit with intense bubbles. Couldn't get over the fresh strawberry flavor, but there was also a really nice green apple and pear component that worked very well together. Very nice!

  • 2007 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Schlossberg Riesling Spätlese 91 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Nose began with S02 like the other night, but that blew off as it did before. Very similar notes to the bottle I had the day before. Great floral component on the nose combined nicely with crushed rocks and honeycomb. Definitely has weight to it, but with its bracing acidic finish it achieves a sublime balance.

  • 1983 Freiherr Heyl zu Herrnsheim Niersteiner Ölberg Riesling Spätlese 93 Points

    Germany, Rheinhessen

This had a lovely golden color in the glass. Aromatics were really wonderful for me with rich honeycomb, petrol, herbs, minerals and apricots. The nose was tantalizing...probably took me 5-7 minutes to actually take my first sip! Palate was deep, and had a very attractive freshness to it. The acidity was still kicking on the finish and this was another great pairing with thai duck, and stuff chicken leg. Hard to tell that this was a 28 year old riesling!

  • 2007 Curran Grenache Blanc 88 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley

Fresh nose of linen, white flowers, and melons. Very enjoyable palate with a subtle herb-driven flavors, honeydew, and white flowers. A wine that I think would be a great pairing with summer cuisine.

  • 2009 Arnot-Roberts Trousseau Luchsinger Vineyard 91 Points

    USA, California, North Coast

I adored this wine. Beautiful ruby color with lovely light floral tones mixed with cranberry and cloves. Reminded me of the fleshier gamay's coming out of Beaujolais in 2009. Palate was light but fierce with good depth, minerality and spices. Finish was long and deep. Ken mentioned that this is the only Trousseau vineyard in the U.S. at the moment. Really makes you wonder why this hasn't caught on more - I was very impressed.

  • 2003 Domaine des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru

The wine had a very nice cranberry color in the glass. Nose had spicy cranberries, red florals, dense red fruit and subtle crushed rocks. Palate was round and ripe for a Lambrays, but given the vintage, they did a great job creating a wine that didn't get overblown. Took a while in the glass to open up and shed some of its heat, but it was worth waiting.

  • 2009 Weingut Keller Riesling von der Fels 85 Points

    Germany, Rheinhessen

Relatively disappointing showing. Flavors on the palate weren't showing the depth that many of the other rieslings we consumed did, and the RS on the finish was off-balance...spiking a bit too much for my tastes.

  • 2008 Dönnhoff Riesling 88 Points

    Germany, Nahe

Nose of white peaches, smokey minerals, and white flowers. Enjoyed the depth on the palate and the exotic bouquet of melon, mangos, and guava. Acidity is firm on the finish. Great QPR.

  • 2009 Scholium Project Riquewihr Lost Slough Vineyards 87 Points

    USA, California, Central Valley, Clarksburg

This was a bizarre wine. Nose had lots of green notes mixed with roasted grains, big time lychee flavors, apples and pears. I thought it was absolutely fascinating how the greenish nose morphed into a fresh fruit-infused palate, finally transitioning into an herb-driven finish. Not a wine for everyone, but a very interesting experience. Tasting notes really cannot do this wine any justice, it needs to be tasted.

  • 2007 Château Doisy-Védrines 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

An impressive Sauternes. Fresh nose of linen, honey, and apricots. Palate was remarkably fresh and the balance was out of this world. Very nice.
