Introduction

A superb tasting of very fine '97s Brunellos (an excellent vintage). The tasting was leaded by Winemaker Golan Flam (Flam Winery), whom started his career in Tuscany (Carpineto)

  • 2000 La Massa Giorgio Primo 92 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

    This is a still young Chianti (10 years old!). It has fresh and strong fruity aromas. Excellent palate – medium to full body, soft tannins, and still very good acidity. It will keep for a few more years. WOW!

  • 1997 Il Poggione (Proprietá Franceschi) Brunello di Montalcino 88 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    Purple with light brown color. All the fruits are gone, some leather in the nose. Light body, a little rough and hollow. For my taste, this one was already finished, although some other tasters enjoyed it.

    Purple and light brown color. Excellent nose – fruits combined with leather and smoke. Comparing with the nose, in the palate it was a little disappointing, with too predominant acidity. Still an excellent wine

  • 1997 Castelgiocondo (Marchesi de' Frescobaldi) Brunello di Montalcino 93 Points

    Excellent, complex nose with red fruit, leather, smoke. Medium bodied, muscular and elegant, prominent acidity and long finish.

  • 1997 Pian Delle Vigne (Antinori) Brunello di Montalcino 94 Points

    For me, this was the winner of the tasting. Superb nose, with red and dark fruits and leather. Muscular, till tannic, but very smooth and well integrated. Very good acidity.

  • 1997 Tenuta Greppo (Biondi-Santi) Brunello di Montalcino 90 Points

    Many in the tasting thought that this one represents the classical, old world brunello. I have to admit, that for me, at least this bottle, was one step behind most of the others. Not much in the nose, light to medium bodied, with nice and smooth tannins, but with some lack of balance to my taste.

  • 1997 Altesino Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli 93 Points

    If the Biondi Santi represented the classic Brunello, this one represents the modern stile. An excellent "finale" for the tasting. Superb nose, complex with a mix of fruits, perfume, leather. Full bodied and chewy (it's a '97!) a lot of sweetness, nice and strong tannins. An excellent, modern wine.
