Flight 1 - Starters (2 Notes)

  • 2005 Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Kabinett 90 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    nose: light petrol, dirt, lightly smoked wood (not exactly oak, just reminiscent of oak)
    palate: clean, very precise, yet full of flavor. almost bursting with flavor, in fact.

  • 2002 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Valmur

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

    the nose was incredibly concentrated, with grapefruit and some woodsy characters
    palate: the polar opposite of the riesling, super dry, a bit doughy (to borrow Eric's descriptor) and almost chunky with weight. Interesting, though it suffered in comparison to the riesling. I'd prefer to have tasted this first, or on its own. NR

Flight 2 - White Burgundy (3 Notes)

  • 2005 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Chevalier-Montrachet 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

    nose: mineral, pineapple, turning more candied as it sat int he glass. hint of seasheel emerged over time too (or was that the shrimp salad??)
    palate the most delicate of the flight, this was light on its feet, very refined, and quite lovely. THough it was overshadowed by the Leflaive, this was a wine I would have fallen in love with on its own.

  • 2004 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles 94 Points

    OMG bottle. the nose was cereal-like, with a bit of celery and then some rice-crispies aromas to it. The palate had more cereal flavor, with sprightly acid, a light bitterness on the sides (or "matchstick" to some) the long finish was amazing, and the flavors continued to complicate over time. I felt like my tongue was being twisted into a balloon-animal by a master French chef. I do wonder how white burgundy can get better than this.

  • 1989 Maison Leroy Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes

    nose: skunky. Never really blew off.
    palate: sour, with intense lemon oil, but dusky and just kind of unappetizing. Not great, but not necessarily flawed...didn't bother with it since the other 2 wines in the flight were dynamite.

Flight 3 - Champagnes (3 Notes)

  • 1983 Charles Heidsieck Champagne Brut Millésimé 96 Points

    A phenomenal bottle of wine. the nose was full of chocolate, caramel, and sweet, generous richness. THe palate was simply delicious. Slightly sweeter, and with less acid than #2 in the flight (the 1988 Krug), it was just drinking in this perfect, sublime way. THis is what aged bubbly is all about - what a treat!

  • 1988 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut

    France, Champagne

    nose: chocolate, similar to the CH tasted alongside, but with more hazelnut and a more complex edge
    palate: higher acid than the CH, this was nevertheless equally delicious in its own right. Clearly, this could age longer with its vibrant lemon backbone. I was enjoying the champers too much to take more detailed notes, but this was all I expect from 1988 krug.

  • 1998 Vilmart & Cie Champagne Cuvée Creation

    nose: fruity, fruit salad, bit of white pepper, dusty at the end
    palate: light, delicate, and a bit overshadowed by the 2 other champers in the flight. Showed well, but perhaps should have been drunk on its own. C'est La Vie. It was still wonderful.

Flight 4 - Bordeaux (4 Notes)

  • 1970 Château Palmer 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

    tasted blind
    herbally fruited and very lovely, with a lightly chalked mouthfeel. quite amazing, and I did not guess it was the oldest in the flight. Superb wine, WOTF.

  • 1982 Château L'Evangile

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

    seemed more oak-infused, with caramel and thicker presence on the tongue compared to the other bordeaux in the flight. Very perfumed and very delicious, though I preferred the Palmer for its delicacy and nuance to this. Still a wonderful bottle (and my first 1982 bordeaux). I guessed this was older than the 1970 Palmer, go figure.

  • 1989 Château La Conseillante 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

    this was the most herbal of the bordeaux int he flight, with gorgeous rosemary and thyme that I could have sniffed all night. The cab franc was really strutting its stuff here, and I found the wine to be "fine and fantastic" according to my notes. Came in a close second to the 1970 Palmer for me.

  • 1989 Château Montrose

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe

    sometimes it's kind of a relief, finding 1 wine out of 4 that I can ignore. Gives me more of chance to concentrate on the other wines my palate adores. The brett infusion does not suit me well, and though I could tell it was incorporated well into the beast of a wine, I found it too horsey and too wonky to take seriously. Well, there were other distractions. Not rated since it was not appreciated. THe company loved it, so I'm certain it wasn't flawed in any way.

Flight 5 - California Cab (3 Notes)

  • 1991 Dominus Estate Napanook Vineyard

    once again, this was tasted late in the evening, so the notes had deteriorated. From memory, this was my favorite of the flight, though I could tell my palate was getting smashed by the 2 other wines (Shafer HS). I enjoy the herbal and green flavors with the california cabernet personality behind it. One day I'll taste this with my head in the game...

  • 1997 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select

    apparently, I was the only person bothered by the touch of VA on this wine. I found it medicinal on the nose, with some disjointed type of midpalate. It seemed a very different beast than the 2002 tasted next to it. anyway, no real notes, except it came in last of the flight.

  • 2002 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select 95 Points

    OK, so THIS is Cali cab. Intensely forthright on the nose, with gobs of fruit and caramel and all sorts of yumminess. THe palate was exactly what the nose promised, though with pedigree to last much longer. Both younger and more voluptuous than the other wines in the flight. I kind of suspected the producer, and was happy to taste this into my own personal oblivion. But for 'real wine' experiences, I still prefer the 1991 Dominus.
