Introduction

Thanks to Bob Fyke and his massive 3L bottle of Montevertine for putting this all into motion. Excellent wines, excellent food (particularly the truffle pasta and the hanger steak), even better company.

WOTN for me was the Soldera by a hair.

  • NV Ulysse Collin Champagne Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut Les Pierrières 91 Points

    France, Champagne

    Light lemon color. Really pretty nose of yeast, flowers, minerality and gummy bear. Silky and elegant on the palate, even more mineral driven.

  • 1998 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 91 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    Light lemon color. Intense, complex aromas of diesel, jasmine and white fruit. Full bodied on the palate, off dry and mouthcoating. Perhaps a touch on the fat side but a beautiful Riesling nonetheless.

  • 1985 Montevertine Il Sodaccio 94 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

    Medium ruby color, cloudy. Intense nose of red licorice, complex mulling spices and pepper with a touch of tomato soup. Full and mouthcoating on the palate with a great acid spine and a fresh, minty finish. From a 3L.

  • NV Frank Cornelissen Susucaru 2 90 Points

    Medium salmon color, cloudy. Bright and intense on the nose, definitely a weird wine, difficult to pin down and even more difficult to rate. Notes of bitter orange, grapefruit, cider and new plastic. Medium bodied on the palate with racy acidity. 90 pts.+?

  • 1994 Soldera (Az. Agr. Case Basse) Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 95 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    Medium ruby color. This was shut down hard after an hour when we started pouring it from the decanter. After another hour it started showing a little, focused red cherry skin, spicebox, turned earth, coffee grounds, with a touch of grain and turned earth. Very complex on the nose though still a little reticent. Full and mouthcoating on the palate, in perfect balance. I'm sure that with more time it would have opened further; perhaps something to drink the next day, but there wasn't time.

  • 1998 Travaglini Gattinara Riserva 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Gattinara

    Deep ruby color. Tight on the nose but opened with about a half hour of air. Strong roasted herbal note, menthol and a touch of red berries. Medium bodied on the palate with lots of fine tannins and racy acidity.

  • 1995 Müller-Catoir Mußbacher Eselshaut Rieslaner Auslese 91 Points

    Medium salmon color. Loads of rosewater on the nose, elements of raisin, spice and apricot. Very full on the palate and mouthcoating but the acidity made it semi sweet, long finish.
