A very enjoyable white Burg - classic Puligny here. Lovely nose showed gentle white fruit, earth and mineral scents along with a touch of cream fraiche. The palate feigned to show lots of acid on the attack, but that flags very quickly, and some nicely integrated fleshy white fruit and cream notes came to the fore. Balance was still very decent for a 2005 though. Past that, the wine showed a dry chalky mid-palate with a bit of the powdery structure, and a nice creamy finish with some well-handled oak. Very friendly, almost pretty in the way it came together. Not the most outstanding wine, but everything was in precisely the right place, all in all making for a really nice drink.
I enjoyed this quite a bit. The nose here showed lots of earthy, volcanic soil scents, some meat, flowery violets, dark plums and spice. Lots of bassy tones. The palate was not quite what you would expect after such a warm, earthy nose though. It had a good sense of concentration, but was certainly not thick or weighty in the way a young Brunello would be. Instead, I got distinctly mid-weight, very nicely elegant fruit held by by fine but still firm tannins and a nice amount of acid. Tons of character here though, with dark cherries, plums and some dark chocolate flavours all wrapped up in earth and spice notes as the wine wound its way into a length finish. Very Italian - could hardly be confused for anything else, and it was a great match for the Italian food on the table, from tomato based stuff to a prosciutto pizza.
