Jtk was kind enough to bring a bunch of wines to share with us. I liked being able to taste such a random collection of wines side by side. Great times.
the nose on this shows a dead ringer for jalapeno peppers. i couldn't get over it! it was amazing. so much jalapeno and green pepper. the nose also shows rich cherries. the palate is soft, rich and lush. lots of cherries and earth. the balance of flavors and sensations is really unique. this wine is in a great place right now.
dark purple color in the glass. the nose shows tons of charcoal and lots of plums. the palate is rich and spicy. fine tannins. lots of charcoal. the green pepper was a little too much for some tasters, but i found it interesting.
Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
burgundy color in the glass. nose of meat, clove, cinnamon. the palate is spicy with a burst of strawberry rhubarb. tannins are still holding up and the acid is there to keep it balanced.
Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
i really liked this rhone blend. smoky cherries, plums on the nose. the palate is full of ripe yet contained fruit. cherry pie, some vanilla, mocha. the tannins are strong enough and the acid is tangy enough to keep it balaned.
the nose on this shows amazing white peach, white flowers, apricot and chalky aromas. the palate gushes with pear, rich honeycomb, white raisins. hedonistic but balanced.
nose full of orange marmalade and honey. rich but balaned with great acid. gorgeous, rich honey, asian pears and orange jam. loved this wine, just like i did last time. i'd love to taste this in 10 years. i've found this producer's pfalz wines to be balanced with richness and acid, and this was a great example of that.
i won't get into the discussion of whether i rate dessert wines higher right now... but let me just say that i really liked this. the color is like dark rum and the aromas of caramel, quince and prunes explode from the glass. its like melted wax on the palate. rich and gushing with flavors of quince, peanut brittle and caramel-covered raisins.
