    This displayed some light red fruits and earth. Perhaps a bit too grippy for me now, as this seemed somewhat austere.

  • 2001 Camigliano Brunello di Montalcino 92 Points

    This was a perplexing wine for me, as I first found it rough, closed and ungiving. Perhaps I've tasted it with a poor food matchup, as others raved about it. I later revisited it and found a much more appealing and layered wine, with hints of sour cherries, earth and cocoa -- and certainly more refined on the palate.

  • 2001 Le Chiuse Brunello di Montalcino 86 Points

    Interesting, yet odd wine. A bit musky and mushroomy, with obvious oak. While the earthy and animal componets are appealing, this seems slightly disjointed and awkward. Not unpleasant but unremarkable.

  • 2001 Pertimali (Livio Sassetti) Brunello di Montalcino 95 Points

    My favorite Brunello producer -- indeed and one of my favorite Italian producers overall. This is always a "Burgundian" type of Brunello for me. This has richness, but in a subtle way. Fruits of steel, complicated with earth and animal scents; this is velvety on the palate and lingering in length. Substanial, yet weightless. Thanks Asher!

  • 2001 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso Flawed

    I've had a number of Ciacci Piccolominis before, and while they seem more ripe and new world in inclination, this was ridiculous. This had to be a flawed bottle? Prunes raisins, cough syryp, nail polish remover... need I say more? Not getting much love here. Not rated.

    A solid wine. While not possessing the heft of some of its peers in this tasting, this displayed poise, balance and decent authority. Quite enjoyable.

Flight 3 - OTHER 2001 TUSCANS (3 Notes)

    This just slaps you in the face and wants to get noticed, but not in a ripe fruit/oak kind of way -- this just shows off class. This is svelte, yet carries rich, pulpy cherries and spice. The acidity here thrusts the wine forward and frames the fruit and spice perfectly. Gorgeous lip-smacking length. Loved it.

  • 2001 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Fontalloro

    I was torn on this wine. I normally like this bottling and this sample did display a lovely savory quality with fine acidity... yet I couldn't help noticing a slighty over-ripe, almost roasted quality to the fruit. While I think this improved with air, it never really won me over. Not rated.

  • 2001 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia 95 Points

    Another winner. I always seem to prefer the Rancia over the Fantalloro and tonight was no different. This was dark, deep and brooding yet full of energy. High quality fruit, fine grained tannins and superb length. Given the copious fruit and structure (and track record) of this wine, I can see this only getting better with time. Fantastic.

Flight 4 - DESSERT (1 Note)

  • 1993 Château Pajzos Tokaji Esszencia 95 Points

    Hungary, Tokaji

    Dark amber, almost brown in color. The discriptors came flowing out on my first sniff: apricots, sultana raisins, prune, toffee, caramel, honey, brown spice, dried fruits, orange skin, creme brulee... The texture was thick; motor-oil-like. The palate echoed the flavors from the nose with fanatical palate-adhesion -- superb length. My only quibble is that while there is (barely) enough acidity to keep this fresh, there is soooo much sugar that I would prefer more acids to keep this dancing, rather than anchored on the palate. An educational experience and a wine I would love to revisit in 20 years. Very impressive.
