Introduction
Another "winning" (sorry couldn't resist the Charlie Sheen allusion) event with our core group of John R (host), Kevin B, John G, Gary A and me with a couple newcomers to the group, Luis D and Jesse B. There were many solid wines including the German starter courtesy of John G (thanks John!). Of course as always there were No Corked Bottles as everyone previewed ahead of time....I guess an ounce of prevention really DOES beat a pound of cure. As always a great time was had by all. Thanks to John R for making the beautiful Edina Country Club Thorpe Room available to us for this event.
2007 Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Kabinett 91 Points
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Nose: Some faint petrol aromas and after glass aeration more floral aromas. Palate: Very off dry. Reminds me more of a Spat than a Kab with apples, pears and a lengthy finish.

2005 Château Laforge 91 Points
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru
Nose: Dark fruits and violets. Really beautiful nose. Palate: Major tannins that softened as the night went on. The dark fruits show with some spice a medium length finish. Still very tight this has a good life ahead.

2002 Château Lascombes 93 Points
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
2+ hour decant. Nose: Typical Lascombes funk and earth. The funk blew off with more glass air time. Palate: Dark and Blue fruited with soft spice and an elegant structure. Later an inky, dense quality showed up as the wine put on weight and complexity. Really good stuff and my WOTN narrowly beating out the '03' Giscours. 93+ points.

2003 Château Giscours 93 Points
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Nose: Some inky notes with truffles and earth. Palate: Soft styled with dakr fruits, cassis, and a medium length finish. This wine continued to excite throughout the evening. For me a close second to the Lascombes.

2004 Château Giscours 92 Points
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Nose: Big, dark fruits, ink and reaspberries in abundance. Palate: As the nose suggests this is much more masculine than the '03' and in need of more time or aeration prior to consumption. Good acidity with red fruits of cherry and raspberry and a medium length finish. Fun to try this back to back with the '03' which is more open for business at this point. Far improved over the last bottle tasted on 6/7/09.

2002 Château Calon-Ségur 91 Points
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe
Nose: Dark fruits with cedar. Palate: Big spice with black pepper, stone mineral and a light to medium length finish. This wine continued to hold interest throughout the night but fell off a bit toward the end of the evening. 91+ points.

2003 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste 92 Points
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Nose: Plums and cedar with pencil lead aromas. Very Pauillac. Palate: The plums showing up front with an underlying spice, good richness and a medium to long finish. Very nice wine. Love the nose on this one.

Nose: Red fruits and minerals. Palate: Great spice levels and the red fruits showing. My notes are sketchy on this wine but I really enjoyed it.

2000 Château Lafon-Rochet 90 Points
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe
Nose: Cherries and high toned spice. Palate: Soft styled with the red fruits showing. This wine was somewhat controversial as some felt it was off but to me it was fine in that there was no TCA or Brett at all. It just seemed a little light. The question remains if it was the style or was it somewhat unrepresentative? For me it drank fine and merits a respectable 90.
