Dinner with Bud and Liz in Wellington

Introduction

Impromptu dinner due to inclement weather. Wonderful meal which included corgette fritters, oysters with green mango, prawns in a basil beurre blanc and wild venison rump with red wine reduction.

    New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough

    A good GV from Marlborough which has correct varietal expression - minerality, white pepper, pears, etc... The wine feels a little hot (14%) and this combined with the residual sugar makes for a slightly unbalanced experience. The wine displays great Marlborough brightness of acidity and fruit purity. I think there is great potential here but for my taste, the wine needs to be sculpted slightly differently. Excellent with a Thai influenced oyster dish with green mango.

  • 1997 Domaine Laroche Chablis Grand Cru Les Blanchots Réserve de l'Obédience 90 Points

    On its own, this wine felt a little past its best. But with a dish of prawns in a basil beure blanc, the wine came alive and the food brought out the very opulent fruit forward nature of the wine. This is an outstanding food wine with the proper match and the class of the wine comes through in the end. Beautifully judged oak handling and lovely texture and acid balance indicative of the year. This wine was likely best 5 years ago but still offers great pleasure.

    Quite Chardonnay on the nose. Some evidence of older oak. Minerality and age apparent on the palate. A solid, if unexceptional wine which has a texture reminiscent of chablis.

    Excellent Graves. Wonderful fruit/oak balance and a sustaining and firm texture. The proportions of this wine are excellent. This wine is aging very well and already displays beautiful secondary characteristics. Well and truly outclassed the Flora Springs Trilogy of the same vintage.

    Very eucalypt and sweet ripe nose. Very new world but feels a little tired. In the mouth the wine has yummy opulent fruit but 15 years has not transformed the wine. Instead the wine strikes me as if it would have been best in its first 8 years. Simply outclassed by Smith Haut Lafitte 1996. Pity, as the wine would no doubt have made for an outstanding experience early in its life.
