Our Connecticut wine tasting group is quite busy and scheduling our next event took over a year but it was well worth it. We concentrated on Italian wines as some of our esteemed members have a lot of exposure to Bordeaux and Napa so we wanted to mix it up a bit. We hosted the event at our house in Wethersfield and every one generously brought appetizers and great bottles of Italian wine for an unforgettable afternoon of tasting and even more important great company.

1997 Castelgiocondo (Marchesi de' Frescobaldi) Brunello di Montalcino 93 Points
Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
1st bottle of a Sunday Italian tasting brought by Rob who purchased this on release and kept it perfectly stored since then. A really gorgeous mature Brunello in a perfect drinking state right now. On the nose are the cherry notes with ceder. A core of red fruit with some savory spice that lingers on the finish. Smooth and balanced but enough acidity to pair well with food.

2007 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia 95 Points
Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Superiore
3rd wine in an Italian Tasting brought by Adam - Decanted for 4 hours. A deep violet color this wine had Napa-Cab like scents on the nose, cassis and espresso. A well balanced wine with velvet tannins and a long finish. This was very Bordeaux like and found out later as I was writing this note this Super Tuscan did not contain any Sangiovese, which explains the notes.
The 2007 Ornellaia is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot.

2006 Tenuta Sette Ponti Oreno Toscana IGT 94 Points
Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
2nd wine of an Italian Tasting brought by Henry and sourced from Adam at CBM - Opened 3 hours then splash decanted. Deep dark color this was a rich and powerful wine whose youth was evident. Dried cherries and forest floor on the nose with lots of complexity. This was a chewy wine with ample tannins for aging.

1998 Soldera (Az. Agr. Case Basse) Brunello di Montalcino 91 Points
Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
5th wine of an Italian tasting and I supplied this from a Wine's till sold out purchase in Jan-11 so not sure of the provenance of this wine. Strawberry fields was the theme of this wine from an 88 pt vintage. From the pour it looked like strawberry juice and this wine was a light and deftly balanced effort, much different from the blockbusters we had been drinking. The nose was mature Brunello and on the palate there was crisp acidity and again strawberries. This was maybe in decline and/or given the weak vintage this was about all this wine would give.

2001 Uccelliera Brunello di Montalcino 93 Points
Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
4th wine of an Italian Tasting brought by Paul and sourced from Adam at CBM. As I enter this tasting note I see that I had a bottle of this in 2009 and my score at that time was 92 with notes that it needed more time. Well a year+ later i bumped it up a point and again this is a very solid Brunello, exhibiting all the traits that make BdM one of my favorites. Dark cherries, damp earth a brooding wine still with ample tannins to lay down for a few years.

2001 Domenico Clerico Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra 94 Points
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Last Bottle of Italian Tasting brought by Eduardo and sourced from Adam at CBM - Decanted about 2 hours. Well we already had 5 Brunellos and 2 Super Tuscans and we happened to save the lone Piedmont wine for last. It was a good choice as this stood out in a very good way. My Brunello experience outpaces my Barolo by better than a 4 to 1 margin and after an good afternoon of many fine Brunellos the difference was striking. This was a dark brooding wine with big tannins but they did not get in the way of enjoying the wine. Anise and dark red fruit were abundant. Many years left on this.

2001 Il Poggione (Proprietá Franceschi) Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 93 Points
Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
6th bottle in an Italian tasting generously brought by Adam - We did a pop-n-pour on this. Well yet another outstanding Brunello and at this point no formal notes were taken but this was very, very expressive with years ahead of it.

2007 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Koplen Vineyard 94 Points
USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Last Bottle of the afternoon - After a 3 hour marathon of 5 Brunellos, 2 Super Tuscans and 1 Barolo I reached into my cellar and said "now for something completely different". The KB was new to most of the tasters and this my first of the single vineyard offerings. Wow, this was a striking bottle with sweet fruit and violets on the nose with an expressive long finish. Cinnamon notes on the nose with crushed berries, very KB yet in a way more refined then the blends. A nice way to end an awesome afternoon.
