Introduction to bordeaux

Introduction

At the store. White wine by itsself, then 4 flights of two wines tasted side by side. Ended with a single glass of Sauternes. Smaller group for the tasting which was better in my opinion. Host did a good job and I think this was due to the smaller size.

Flight 1 - Single White (1 Note)

2008 Château des Gravières Bordeaux Blanc 87 Points

France, Bordeaux

Very light color. Sweet nose of peach, grapefruit. Floral notes on the taste along with a little fresh grass. Medium finish which was longer than I expected from the light color.

Flight 2 - Lower priced Reds (2 Notes)

2005 Château Saint Ahon 88 Points

France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Good QPR. Burgundy rim with opaque center. Poured at a tasting and there was a lot of sediment in my glass (and I was not at the end of the bottle). Wet forest on the nose, dry with medium acidity. Classic bdx palate with earth tones. Not very harmoneous in the flavor profile though and it left me wanting more depth. Still, not a bad wine to taste as part of a tasting.

2008 Château Moulin La Bergère 86 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Georges-Saint-Émilion

Deep purple with a little violet on the rim. Merlot based wine that was very young and harsh. This may smooth out in another year or so and drink nicely. Sweetness on the nose with a floral scent and subtle pine. Vanilla and plum on the palate. Quite disjointed, but the fruit was intense.

Flight 3 - Medium priced Reds (2 Notes)

2006 Château Lafon-Rochet 90 Points

France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe

Burgundy appearance, especially on the rim. Spicey floral nose. Wood and graphite taste. Good intensity and firm tanins that should allow this to age well. Nice acidity and dry. It has a great foundation, but what it was supporting was not as outstanding. Not a lot of depth and character to the wine. Still, it is "all there" and very enjoyable.

2004 Château Saint-Pierre 90 Points

France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

Very nice and balanced wine. It may have some improvement yet in the bottle, but it is drinking very nicely now. Dark purple color with only a little fading on the rim. Nose of pine and cedar. Gunmetal and fresh tilled soil tastes leading to a balanced and lingering finish. Had a nice "taste of the place" as opposed to fruit which was dark blue and lurking just below the surface.

Flight 4 - Medium priced Reds (2 Notes)

2006 Château Malartic-Lagravière 90 Points

France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

A nice merlot based wine. Soft and cuddly. Floral notes on the nose and palate with dark blackberries picking up in the mid palate and drifting effortlessly into the lingering finish. Tannins are there, but they do not distract at all.

2006 Château Prieuré-Lichine 91 Points

France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Purple with a violet rim. Forest and wet moss nose. The taste was very nicely balanced with blue fruit and light cherry supported by velvety tanins and a hint of oak. Drinking very well right now. Not sure that the wine will be as nice if the fruit fades too much.

Flight 5 - More expensive Reds (2 Notes)

2006 Château Larcis Ducasse 91 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

Deep red with a burgundy rim. Loam and pine forest nose. Palate strated with a fresh cut flowers and moved into deeper forest notes where it picked up some reduced blackberries and vanilla. The finish was enjoyable and satisfying. The tanins were very firm and hopefully they will mellow a little as the wine ages. 91+

2004 Château Lynch-Bages 91 Points

France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Wet grass and barnyard nose. Very earthy palate, but some red fruits make an appearance in the mid palate and linger into the finish. Not a good QPR.

Flight 6 - Desert Wine (1 Note)

2005 Château Doisy-Védrines 88 Points

France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Hmmm, I really like Sauternes and I see I am out of line with the rest of the community here. Medium golden color. Rich nose of appricot and peach. Peach and appricot on the palate as well. Quite sweet and lacking in complexity to me.
