Introduction

Nice lineup for this tasting. I believe all of the wines were opened beforehand, but they were not decanted.

Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 2008 Château des Gravières Bordeaux Supérieur Blanc 84 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Bordeaux Supérieur

I had this same wine a couple of months ago and it showed completely different from this bottle. Gorgeous nose of lemon and honeysuckle. On the palate, very tart and acidic loaded with lemon. Rather short finish. Was practically undrinkable (due to the harsh acidity) on its own but was more than OK with hard cheese.

  • 2008 Château Moulin La Bergère 86 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Georges-St. Émilion

Expansive rich savory nose of roast beef and violets. Palate showed a generous amount of plum and cassis. Good acidic balance with a lot of fine tannins on the finish.

  • 2005 Château Saint Ahon 86 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

This didn't show as well as the last time I tasted this about 2 months ago. Nose was quite nice, showing some classic Bordeaux cement dust and cassis. On the palate, nice flavors but seemed quite thin and finished rather short with tons of fine tannins.

  • 2004 Château Saint-Pierre 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Fabulous nose showing blackberry and caramel. Gorgeous palate of dark profiled fruit, well-integrated oak, with great balance and firm tannins. Very long finish. This one needs more time to soften the tannins, but is very good right now. My favorite wine of the tasting.

  • 2006 Château Lafon-Rochet 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Very tight nose - wasn't showing much. Very earthy and tannic on the palate - perhaps shut down right now. Fairly short finish. Not ready yet.

  • 2006 Château Prieuré-Lichine 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Very fragrant classic Bordeaux nose. On the palate, very soft with classic Bordeaux flavors, some oak, balanced, and finishing with a copious amount of very fine tannins. This one could use more time in the cellar, but quite nice right now.

  • 2006 Château Malartic-Lagravière 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Not much going on with the nose - some wood perhaps. On the palate, dust and savory roasted meat with good depth. Excellent balance, but finished very tannic. Should improve with some time in the cellar.

  • 2006 Château Larcis Ducasse 88 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Quite oaky but with fresh fruit bowl on the nose. Some nice cassis fruit on the attack, but the very chalky tannins asserted themselves from the mid-palate on. This should improve a lot with some time in the cellar.

  • 2004 Château Lynch-Bages 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Unremarkable nose - A little earthiness perhaps. The palate seemed shut down at first, but showed some nice classic Bordeaux flavors after about 10 minutes of swirling in the glass. This one needs to rest a few more years at least.

  • 2005 Château Doisy-Védrines

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

On the nose, apricots up the yingwazoo. Rich and sweet on the palate. I don't really drink very many dessert wines, so I don't really know how to evaluate these. No score.

Closing

I think all of the reds needed either more time or long decants.
