2011 Rhone Rangers Tasting San Francisco

This was my first Rhone Rangers gathering in four years, and I appreciated the focus and smooth organization of the event, as well as the excellent program listing the wines. I managed to make it to nearly 30 producers and to sample 128 wines. Due to the time constraints, I had to pass on some great producers that I get chances regularly to sample elsewhere--like Ridge, JC Cellars, Novy and Qupé--and I didn't get to all the other producers on my list, either, but did manage to try several that were new to me. Amongst the new ones, the two most impressive were Arnot-Roberts, responsible for three Syrahs that I rated 92 points or higher, and Wind Gap, for two Syrahs I rated 92 points or higher. I am very familiar with Pax Mahle, of course, from his Pax wines, and I had tried a couple of his Wind Gap wines before this, but this was my first chance to sample most of the current lineup. Coincidentally, Pax shares his winemaking cellar in Forestville with Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Roberts of Arnot-Roberts, the other winery with a strong showing that was new to me. All the other producers whose wines I rated 92 points or higher were on my list of "usual suspects": Big Basin, Cabot, Core, Gustafson, Jemrose, Lagier Meredith, Ortman and Outpost.

A lot of 2008 wines were represented at the tasting, and I find myself even more averse after this event to smoke-tainted '08s from all over the State than I was, even, before the event. They just make me cringe; all I can taste is the smoke taint, despite valiant attempts to filter and the like by many producers. If I never had to taste another smoke tainted '08 I'd be very happy, but I know inevitably I will. With all the rain we've had in California this year, I do hope we've seen the last of these devastating major fires, and the related damage they do to wine, for many years to come.

My very favorite wines at this tasting, that I rated 92+ points or higher, were:

As one can tell from the list above, except for a blend (Syrah/Merlot), the only varietals represented are Syrah and Petite Sirah. I continue to feel these are the Rhone varietals (if you count Petite Sirah as a Rhone varietal, which it really isn't) that do best by far in California. I found even fewer Grenaches or Mourvèdres that impressed me this year than usual, and I'm not sure why that is, other than the fact that the '08 vintage was pretty rough all around. I had a few good whites, fewer than usual, the best of which were from Core, Gustafson Family, Jemrose, Chesters Anvil (Lagier Meredith/Pott) and Tablas Creek. The whites I rated 91 points or higher were:

'09 Jemrose Viognier Egret Pond - 91 points
'09 Lagier Meredith Pott Chesters Anvil Gretna Green Stagecoach Vineyard - 92 points

I tried several rosés, but found them pretty underwhelming, with the exception of the 2010 Gustafson Syrah Rosé (90+ points) and the non-vintage Domaine Serene "R" (90 points).

All in all, I have to say this was not the most exciting Rhone-style wine gathering in terms of wine or new discoveries I've been to, although the wines specially noted above were wonderful. I think the highly problematic '08 vintage wasn't showing all that well at this event, with a few exceptions. It was definitely a fun event, though, and well worth attending.
