    Argentina, Mendoza

    sweetly floral on the nose, it was broad and a touch flabby on the midpalate. Nonetheless, an excellent buy at the price. I would certainly drink this again.

  • 2008 Bodega Catena Zapata Chardonnay Catena Alta 90 Points

    Argentina, Mendoza

    the nose was certainly comprised of oak + fruit, but it was unabashed in this presentation. Altogether Clear and decisive, really, not mucking about with any secondary aromas or covert subtlety.
    The palate was very well-balanced, again, not wavering from its mission to deliver fresh tropical fruit and toasted caramel-nuttiness. I liked it for exhibiting its best attributes so frankly. New World and Proud Of It.

  • 2008 Bodega del Fin del Mundo Pinot Noir Reserva

    Argentina, Patagonia

    nose: sweet funk that I could best describe as prune and chemicals. Odd. Perhaps flawed?
    palate: very dry, almost devoid of fruit. It did not taste like the nose, thankfully, but it was kind of yuck. I wonder if it was flawed....though the notes below indicate that my bottle was somewhat representative of others' experiences.

  • 2009 Altos Las Hormigas Bonarda Colonia las Liebres 82 Points

    nose: alcohol and black fruit
    palate: spicy and unbalanced, it was almost too thick with tannin. No component made this worth analyzing more thoroughly...I moved to the next bottle quickly.

  • 2007 Bodega Melipal Malbec 90 Points

    Argentina, Mendoza

    This was one of my top wines of the tasting. The nose had generous fruit and a bit of green pepper. The palate was extra creamy and supported by solid structure, though it ended with a short finish. Very drinkable, this is what I think a lot of people are looking for from Malbec. I would buy this for $20.

  • 2008 Bodega Catena Zapata Malbec Catena 87 Points

    nose: smoke and greenery plus a bit of mulch
    palate: very plummy, but a bit lacking ind epth. I preferred the Melipal to this wine, though I did appreciate an added flavor complexity that the previous reds had not shown.

  • 2008 Baqueano 72 Points

    Argentina, Patagonia, Neuquén

    nose: high-toned, almost volatile, and marked by roasted/overripe aromas. I did not like the nose
    palate: it improved once I took a sip, but not by much. Reminded me of a pinotage, and I don't like pinotage. Amber brought this as "something different" and it definitely fit that bill. I would not seek this out. Ever.

  • 2003 Achával-Ferrer Merlot

    Argentina, Mendoza, Valle de Uco

    decanted about 2-3 hours prior to drinking
    nose: dusty blackberry, a little herbal (a lot herbal in comparison to earlier bottles in the tasting)
    palate: super smooth, and drinking at peak, I believe. The acidity is still vibrant with red supple fruits, though the tannin has faded to a supporting role. Well put together, this reminded me of a bordeaux in character, though the fruit was clearly new-world.
