Introduction

This was a last minute impromptu gathering. I was joined by Dr. Elliot L and his lovely gf Patricia. The food and wines were excellent but the company was even better, a pleasant not so wine centric evening.

  • 1991 Mongeard-Mugneret Clos Vougeot 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

    Purchased at Christies, excellent appearance, darker fruit expression initially but open up with air then a hint of raspberry and strawberry jam, a hint of flower and caramel, light and silky palate, nice balance, very pleasurable, at its peak but will stay at plateau for the next ten to fifteen years.

  • 1993 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

    A classic Bonneau du Martray expression, highly toned minerality, piecing acidity, initially very tight, very sharply toned but very little fruit expression, lemon and apple. With air, gets a bit richer but lose the freshness with a hint of tarte tatin. A classic CC for those who prefer high acid and high minerality which in case your rating would be around the mid 90s.

  • 2003 Château Pontet-Canet 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    It was opened the night before. Initially Elliot thought it may be slightly corked. My allergy was bothering me so I wasn’t absolutely certain but no TCA in the nose and the palate. It opened up gradually, initially showing generous palate and concentration and towards to the end of the night almost a Margaux like perfume, cedar and cassis. It will take awhile to open, not completely open and not much tertiary flavor. It will take another five to ten years to mature. Excellent concentration, an exceptional wine. 97 point potential.

  • 1999 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru

    Open for business, sweet jammy primary fruit, sweet spices, excellent concentration, well balanced and nice finish. I read Don Cornutt’s TN in CT and I am in complete agreement. It has the Meo signature but doesn't taste like a typical NSG. The fruit expression is still primary yet drinking extremely well. It will age further. This is an excellent wine for those who love the generous upfront jammy fruit almost Californiaesque while maintaining the Burgundian balance.

I still wonder how Elliot stays so thin considering how much he eats.
