A pale straw wine with a light body. A pronounced nose of pear, citrus and grass. Tastes of pear, lemon pith and minerals. The finish is short with more pear and some lemon pith.
The San Vincenzo Alselmi is a pale golden wine with a medium body. The nose is reluctant, but has lemon and faint melon. In the mouth, creamy lemon dominates with melon a metallic feel to the wine. The finish has lemon on a short to medium finish with a curious white pepper zing right on the tip of the tongue.
The Fontanafredda Barbera is garnet colored wine with a light to medium body, which has a rich nose of mushroom, earth and cherry. Very smooth in the mouth, with tastes of black cherry and blackberry. Plenty of acidity. Blackberry and black cherry dominate the medium finish. This is much smoother than the typical Barberas that I have in the past, there is plenty of fruit to balance the acidity. This is a very solid showing of the varietal.
An extension from my previous note, where I was not able to taste the Serra Del Prete under satisfactory conditions. The wine is medium bodied with a purple-black hue. The nose is strongly earthy with a deep cedar note. In the mouth, tastes of smooth black raspberry dominate. The wine has a healthy dose of acidity and also has just a slight astingent edge in the mouth, likely due to the relative youth of this vintage. The finsih has medium length with blackberry, However, the tannins are still fierce, with a capital F. This vintage is still very young and needs at least 5 years bottle age. That said, I still stick with my original statement, there is great potential here for those with patience.
The Barrua is a deep garnet wine with a medium body. The complex nose features mushroom, cedar, earth with a hint of licorice. Amazingly smooth in the mouth, with tastes of blackberry and black raspberry. The lingering finish has layered black raspberry, earth and licorice. This wine is showing beautifully at this time. Enjoy.
