The Salice Salentino is a garnet wine with a light body. Nose of Cherries and smoke with some wood. Tastes of cherries flood the mouth, along with a healthy dose of oak. Lots of tannin here, but it is smooth and not at all harsh. The finish is short with cherries and a lot of cedar.
A deep garnet wine with a medium body, the Creta Roble has a rich nose of a central note of black olive, along with earth, licorice, vanilla and a hint of violet. In the mouth, it is soft and round with tastes of plum, black cherry and sweet blueberry. The tannins are mouth coating, and the finish has medium plus length with black cherry. This is nicely layered with a decent amount of complexity. The 40-60 year old vine Tempranillo really shows its stuff here. This is very nice for the price.
The Cheysson Chiroubles Beaujolais is a bright ruby wine with a light body. The nose is wet earth and cranberry. Soft and round tastes of black tea & red berries with impressive depth fill the mouth. The finish is short with more red berries. This is a Beaujolais that has some real stuffing to it. A very impressive Gamay.
The Beronia Reserva is a ruby/garnet color with a medium body. The nose has a distinctive note of licorice, with rich earth and a slight menthol edge. Think Vick's vapor rub. It's very faint. In the mouth, huge tastes of licorice and spice with cherries. The medium plus finish lingers nicely with a sustained licorice note. This was the winner on the night for me. Lots of depth on the nose and in the mouth with a lengthy finish.
A garnet wine with a medium body. The nose has licorice, tea and the scent of old socks. But in a good way. Really. Tastes of red raspberry, sour cherry, black tea and oak. Smooth in the mouth and acidity that is restrained for a Barberra. The finish has black tea and sour cherry. OK, it's not my style. The wine grabs me, just not in the right places.
