Met with Mssrs Saxon and Laband and Madame Bushnell for some good wine and conversation. These are memory notes, so if the participants wish to correct me, feel free.
1990 Schloss Schönborn Hattenheimer Nussbrunnen Riesling Auslese
Germany, Rheingau
(4/22/2011)
Deep yellow gold. Great nose showing some petrol notes, but plenty of honeyed stone fruit as well. Medium bodied and picking up weight as the wine warmed in the glass. Refreshing palate showed canteloupe, apricot and honey. High acidity and great length. This has tons of life ahead of it. A great example of middle aged German Riesling.

NV Marie-Courtin Champagne Résonance Extra Brut

This was just delicious. Pale gold color. Expressive and appealing nose full of granny smith and just a hint of bread dough. More green apple on the palate with some citrus notes thrown in. Massive acidic cut on this wine. Mouthwateringly dry and delicious. One of those go to bottles with many different foods which worked great for our group as we had a variety of dishes and flavors in front of us. Fantastic stuff!

2000 Terralsole Brunello di Montalcino
Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Dark garnet. Spicy nose with some mineral notes and dark cherry. Full bodied and in a secondary stage of evolution. Spices and dark fruits dominate the mid palate. One of those wines for me that is difficult in a group setting as one focuses more on the company and conversation than nerding it up burying your nose in a glass and doing too many swishes and spits. This one would show a flash of beauty, then it would flash away. I would love to try this again as a singular wine over dinner because I found a lot to like about it. Plenty of acidity still and medium to long finish.

1997 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
(4/22/2011)
Brick red. A hint of Brett on the nose with mostly tar and a bit of cherry. This tasted quite advanced and the fruit was mostly dried out. Something was up with this bottle as the vintage and obviously producer should be showing much better. I can't really say much more than it showed trademark Nebbiolo characteristics, but everything was muted.

1995 M. Chapoutier Hermitage La Sizeranne
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
(4/22/2011)
Opaque purple. Some reductive qualities on the nose at first along with black fruit, olive and black pepper. Full bodied, the palate was a bit coiled up, but offered black and purple fruit, just a hint of citrus and massive amounts of umami flavors. Texturally, the tannins were fine grained and with a few more hours of air, this would likely be a gem. Good balance here with medium to high acidity. One of us should have grabbed this on the way out.

2001 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Colonnello
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
(4/22/2011)
Gave this a long decant and left in the cellar all day before dumping it back in the bottle and taking it to the restaurant. No matter, this is nowhere near ready to drink. Nose is reticent, but offers a dash of rose blossom and red fruit. The palate is tight, tannic and backward right now. Good components are in place, but they are not working and playing well together. Red and black fruit, tar, spices- very linear. Decent finish, but a bit too much tannin to be enjoyable.
