Dinner at Holly and Tony's

Introduction

Holly and Tony had us, Tim and Nancy, Beth and Roy, Patti, Joan S., Kathy and Chuck over for a great dinner of an enormous Rib Roast, mashed potatoes, and sauteed spinach. Each person brought a bottle and Tony dipped into his cellar for a few extras. The wines were mostly from the US and the two italians that we brought were good but would have shown better earlier in the night before some of the fruit bombs were dropped! All wines were served blind in decanters.

My favorites were the Pahlmeyer, the Montelena Estate, and the Uccelliera. Ann's were the Montelena Estate, Continuum and the Hill Family Estate.

  • 2007 Far Niente Chardonnay

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Lemon merangue (spelling?), oak, vanilla and pear. A little oaky for my taste but this maybe better with a little more time.

  • 1997 Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Aromatics of red fruits, slight herbal notes and leather. Slightly tart red and black fruits. The tarter fruit and the dryness had me thinking old world but the slightly noticible alcohol made me think new world. Fine tannins. Nice wine.

  • 2006 Continuum Proprietary Red

    Vanilla and lots of fruit on the nose. Black fruits with loads of tannins and noticible alcohol. Clearly new world. I thought it was somewhat simple and I think it needs some time to hit its stride.

  • 2003 Uccelliera Brunello di Montalcino

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    Cherry, mint, and leather on the nose. Earthy, leather, cherry, dry and tart fruit. I really enjoyed this again. This has some life left and I will try to save my last bottle for a couple more years.

  • 1999 E. Pira & Figli (Chiara Boschis) Barolo Cannubi

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Earthy, funky,musroom notes on the nose with some mint red fruits and anise. Very dry in comparison to the previous wines, especially the California wines. This and the Uccelliera should have gone earlier in the line up to show better. Cherry and red fruits on the palet with lots of tannins. This wine has some life left.

  • 2006 Cayuse Syrah Bionic Frog

    USA, Oregon, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley

    Ripe, funky nose with some earth, and green pepper. Softer on the palet than I expected after smelling it. Vanilla, bell pepper, complex. There is a lot going on in this wine but a little ripe for my taste.

  • 2008 Herman Story Syrah Nuts & Bolts

    On the nose there is a lot of ripe fruit and noticible alcohol that forbodes of the impending burn coming on the palet. Fairly simple but tasty none the less. The noticibly high alcohol really detracts from the wine for my tastes. Pretty popular with the group but just where my taste seems to be heading.

  • 2007 Martinelli Zinfandel Jackass Vineyard

    The last bottle of the night and by this time my palet was fried and my notes were brief. Tons of fruit on the nose. While this was very ripe and I didn't find it over the top. Lots of black and dark fruits with some spice on the finish.
