Introduction
Domaine Lucien Jacob is one of our favourite Burgundy producers. Based in the village of Echevronne, just to the north of Beaune, this is very much a family business. We last saw the eponymous Lucien, a former Deputé (MP) for the Côte d'Or, in May of last year, happily cutting the hedge outside the family home. The day to day running of the business is now in the hands of daughter Chantal, son Jean-Michel and charming English daughter-in-law, Christine. We will taste 8 vintages of their Savigny-lès-Beaune - 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2001, 1999 and 1996. A great opportunity to follow the evolution of textbook red Burgundy.

Quite low intensity. Thin edge. Clear and Bright. Creamy nose, perfumed. Sweet red fruit - cherry. Touch of mint and spice. Smooth, subtle, integrated with good acidity. Lush ripe fruits (raspberry), medium length.

Slightly more intense than the 2006 tasted at the same session. Clear and Bright. Slight astringency on the nose, intense fruits with mint and spice notes. Rich, good acidity, firmer tannins still a little dominant. Good length.

Medium to low intensity. Moving from Fruit to secondary notes on the nose. More garrigue and spice. Some minerality and wet stone also apparent. Smooth, integrated, silky tannins. Long with ripe fruit on the palate.

Quite an intense colour. Expressive nose with sweet fruit and cream. Smooth, firm tannins, low(ish) acidity but sweet ripe fruit.

Medium intense. Thinning edge with some colour change. Herbs and spice on the nose with red fruit underneath. Smooth, integrated, silky tannins. Good acidity and medium fruit on the palate.

More ageing signs with a low intensity of colour. Vegetal notes on the nose with a touch of animal. Smooth, light, good acidity, mushroom and umami on the palate with echos of fruit underneath.

Light mahogany colour. Clear and bright. Soft, subtle with animal notes and ceps on the nose. Integrated, smooth, subtle with ceps following through on the complex palate. There was still an underlying sweetness of fruit.

Medium intense. Clear and bright. Ceps, animal, touch of fruit and liquorice. Soft, smooth, good acidity, long, warm, becoming figgy.

Brownish in hue. Clear and Bright. Difficult nose, some mushroom but not a lot else. Soft, good acidity but little fruit remaining.
