Introduction

Got together with Asher Rubinstein last night to kill some time and see if the Yankees could actually win a game for a change. Just a couple of wines.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2001 Albert Boxler Riesling Sommerberg L31D

    France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru

    Deep yellow in color with opulent aromas that the glass could not contain. A lovely mix of intense mineral, lightly tropical fruit and mint flavors and aromas. There's a lip-smacking acid backbone here, but there's plenty of fruit to balance it out. That said, there's a lot of minerality in this wine. Picks up hints of red fruit with some air. Mouthfilling and still quite young. Lovely stuff. Solid A- with potential for a little more improvement with further aging.

  • 1999 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    Another wine sporting a beautiful nose. Fresh and intense raspberry kirsch, meat/beef jerky and baking spices with a touch of cardamom. Truly lovely aromas. While pleasant on the palate with a somewhat similar flavor profile, it's not as enjoyable in the mouth as it was on the nose. A little under stuffed given how much is going on aromatically and there's a distracting bitter burnt rubber aspect that Asher thought manifested itself more like burnt grease. The wine shows the coarseness and earthiness that's pretty typical of many '99's. Would be better with some greasy meat. Solid B+.
