Northern Rhone Dinner 2 vintages of La Chappelle, Landonne, Voge

Introduction

Myself, Sax and Laband on a Thursday night for some Northern Rhones. A good time and some really good wines.

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 1988 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

    Beautiful color despite the age. Dark maroon with a bricked edge. Beautiful nose showing red fruit, some green pepper, and floral notes. A few secondary components around (olive brine), but this has a ton of room to evolve. Perfect balance and palate weight. Red fruit, good acidity, savory components. Just singing. Tannins have mostly resolved, but some grip still persists. Long, floral finish.

  • 1999 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

    Much more advanced in appearance than the 1988 we drank next to this one. Brick red color. The nose here was earthy and spicy. This really needed more air to open up than the 88, and I know for a fact that it received more before drinking. The 99 Chappelle is known as a challenging wine, and it drank on the austere side at first. Once open, a mix of black and red fruit, with a spicy component. This picked up a ton of weight with air time, and still shows plenty of tannic grip. Medium finish.

  • 1997 Alain Voge Cornas Vieilles Vignes

    Opaque garnet. The nose on this is quite deep and filled with savory notes. Cured meat, olives, and plenty of earthy/mushroom components. Full bodied wine which was certainly the most rustic of the bunch. Red and black fruit with some stone fruit thrown in which gave it some higher tones. This is quite a masculine wine which transitions that fruit laden mid palate to a mélange of umami and meaty flavors on the long finish. Great balance, but the structure is still in front a bit on this one. We drank this from a 375 and I wish I could taste this on the second day.

  • 1996 Rene Rostaing Côte-Rôtie La Landonne

    Dark garnet. My favorite aromatics of the evening. At first, red fruit and floral aromas, but with air a pronounced dill component took shape. This wine was confounding to me in all the best ways. Quite approachable, bright and fresh on one hand showing gorgeous high toned red fruit, spiciness and a lovely mouthfeel. On the other hand, this had the highest acidity at the table and was still full of firm tannins. The transition from mid palate to finish really defined the beautiful palate weight and showed a brooding aspect as it lingered with a good mix of fruity and savory notes. Very enjoyable bottle.
