Introduction
Heritage Auctions held a preview tasting for their upcoming single collection auction and invited us to bring something to share. Some nice wines from both sides and a fun evening.
2002 Dom Pérignon Champagne
France, Champagne
Very tight but showing a lot more fruit concentration than my previous tastes of this wine. There is still pronounced sulfur and strong tartness so this needs some rest. There seems to be some strong variation among the bottles of this vintage.

1996 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Lovely peppery, meaty nose. Elegant and beautiful palate with more pepper notes. About as good as CdP gets for me. I savored this one.

1970 Château Montrose
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe
Cedar on the nose with a touch of heat. Big fruit here but kind of clumsy and not together. Drinks like a wine from a hot vintage that probably should have been drank earlier. Still very alive and generous though.

1986 Gaja Barbaresco
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Tar and tea on the nose. Tight with a precisely structured finish of pleasing acid and tannin. This was lovely but still has room to grow. Check back in 5-10 years.

2000 Château Lafite Rothschild
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
The nose is a bit reductive with primary Cabernet notes underneath but tight overall. Pretty around the edges with dense fruit in the middle. Medium tannins. This was tight and a bit hard to get a read on but its no secret it is a pup.

2003 Colgin Cariad

Tar greets on a nose of dense sweet dark berry framboise. Actually tight in expression though the fruit is rich and fleshy. Very much in the mode of a cult Cali Cab in style.

1974 Fontanafredda Barolo
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
The fruit has mostly faded leaving the secondary nebbiolo notes to do the talking as Nedders mentions. Definitely not gone with plenty of acid and still with some tannin to keep it interesting. Best with food now.

2005 Aubert Pinot Noir Reuling Vineyard
USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
very much in the mode of a full throttle Cali Pinot. Big sweet fruits with the alcohol showing a bit. Doesn't warrant the tariff IMO. Plenty of wines similar to this for less the half the money.

1980 Château d'Yquem
France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Complex nose showing baked apricots laden with honey. Honey palate with apricots at the finish. The fruit is still fairly fat here leading me to think this can get better as the fruit lays back some evening out the palate.
